Kutaisi wins national best practice award for the smart eco-city portfolio.

National Association of Local Authorities, with support from the EU, Denmark, and UNDP, reveals best practices among Georgia’s municipalities.
Georgian municipalities presented their development projects and local solutions at the fifth annual contest organized by the National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG) to reveal the best practices in local governance and municipal performance.

The initiative was supported by the European Union (EU), UNDP and Denmark, under their broader assistance for regional and local development in Georgia – the EU-funded programmes, Mayors for Economic Growth Facility (M4EG) and Integrated Territorial Development, and the Denmark-funded project for Decentralization and Good Governance at the Local Level.

Fourteen municipalities were awarded this year, with Kutaisi winning the national award for the smart eco-city portfolio.

I don't really live in a smart city because I don't have the opportunities that residents of a real smart city have. We only have one smart bench with solar panels that we can use to charge mobile phones and one "charger" for electric cars. Whereas real smart cities have more.

Hi! :) My city has some smart stuff. One of them is that all the lights are switching off in the same time. There is also an app where they give you money if you are for example, a student that is travelling to their school everyday. They give you online scholarships and many more. :)

I think my city even tough is pretty small is smart in some kind of way.
In my town we have benches on the solar system with free wi-fi and on that bench the mobile phone can be charged. We have chargers for electric cars. We can buy many things online, e.g. train or bus tickets. I think my city is smart, but there are still a lot of shortcomings. Some cities are much more developed than mine.

We tried to contact our authorities to get some informations about smart tech in our city and we had no luck to get our answers, yet. That couldn't stop us to ask some building investitors, traffic control policemen, architecture students etc about info they can provide us, and this is what we found:
1. We do have some smart traffic signs and speed limiters.
2. We have smart lighting in some parts of Vlaska and Mladenovac (our city).
3. Newer buildings are equiped with smart heating systems, so residents of those buildings can regulate heating over mobile application.
4. Additionally some investitors are providing an option of integrating Amazon's Alexa Smart Home Ins

The Municipality of Olhão has, since January 2023, been on the board of the “Smart Cities” Municipalities Section of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities.

The Smart Tour will soon be created, a tour that will cover various municipalities and intermunicipal communities across the country, so that mayors can learn about and share the good practices developed in the national territory in this matter.

Ricardo Calé from Olhão City Council said: “the digital transition is, perhaps, the greatest goal of this generation, and it is crucial to put technology at the service of quality of life in cities, even making use of community funds made available for this area . In Olhão, this work has been done, in the sense of using technology to make our city increasingly friendly to people”.

The European Union defines Smart Cities as “a set of systems and people interacting intelligently, using energy, materials, services and resources in a sustainable way”.

In general terms, it can be said that smart cities are those that invest in technology to improve municipal management and provide their citizens with a better quality of life and sustainability of spaces.

The strong concentration of population in cities poses a number of challenges to municipal management, namely with regard to pollution, car traffic, housing or access to services.

In Olhão, examples of these measures are the creation of the Occurrence Management Platform (https://ocorrencias.cm-olhao.pt/), the implementation of light mobility in the city, video surveillance, provision of free Wi-Fi in various areas of city, or the modernization of public lighting through the use of LED lighting with telemetry.

The Municipality is already working on the implementation of smart parking, as well as the use of artificial intelligence to optimize urban waste collection routes
