Adopting a relationship-building program results in kids' academic performances improving by over 11%. Drop out rates plummet and attendance increases.
A well designed Social Emotional development program will result in increased self-awareness for our students, and positive behaviors in and out of the classroom. Students will build character and bullying will decrease. These are just a few benefits of why we NEED a strong Social Emotional development program and adopt relationship-building strategies.

Students will also build strong interpersonal skills like; attitudes towards violence, academic achievement, and prosocial behaviors.
Evidence-based Social Emotional interventions can help civic attitudes and behaviors, school climate and safety, and the disciplinary outcomes that are best for our students.

Review current events; doing this with our class will allow us the opportunity to connect the lesson plan with real world scenarios. Let's connect with our students.
Share success stories; When we bring in speakers who "came from nothing and made something out of their life", students can understand that anything is possible.
Quote of the day; When students see words of inspiration, it triggers a reaction in them.
Greet students; Every day welcome them into your classroom. Whether it is all day or just one period, let them know you are there for them and they are safe with you. They are YOUR kids!

What I believe are some good next steps for school and staff.

First off, I believe that we need to use Social Emotional Learning and academic learning together. Many times people see SEL as its own topic that needs to be taught. SEL is meant to be intertwined in the lessons. No two classrooms or teachers will do it the same, so it is hard to compare. Just be compassionate, patient, and understanding and it will come naturally.
Next, I see a big overhaul on grading. If one teacher allows for revisions and another does not, students can get flustered and even angry. We all need to give students the same opportunities to make mistakes and learn from them, not be punished by them.
Lastly, Let's focus on how we, the adults, can foster a good school climate for our students. We can change the overarching school climate to reflect how we feel and what we want our students to feel. Let's become more nurturing, take opportunities to model SEL experiences every chance we get both in and out of the classroom.
