May 4th, 1970. As President Nixon prolongs the war in Vietnam, young citizens in the United States become increasingly furious to see their peers drafted. Students of Kent State join in the protests, and as their cries become louder, so do the thundering boots of the National Guard. Through many voices Deborah Wiles creates a dialogue about the event known as the Massacre at Kent State University. One question to ponder: Why do you think Deborah Wiles chose to write Kent State in verse? How does it affect the storytelling?
