When I first started learning how to read, I was so excited that I could read, so I tried to teach my younger sister. I would get frustrated with her. I wanted her to learn so badly because I enjoyed it, but it was not something that she enjoyed so much.

When I took Ap Lang in my Junior year, I started to look at nonfiction reading and examining it. In examining the elements of the text like the writer and how the background of the reader impacts the way the story was told I was able to look at reading in a whole new light.

When coming into AP Lit, I was never crazy about poems or any piece of literature similar to them because I could never understand them that much. Being in AP Lit, I started to understand more that poems give indirect answers through their form and context. This made me enjoy reading poems so much more because not only could I understand them more, but I started to appreciate them more.

Reading Mentor

My mom is my reading mentor in the way that ever since I was a little kid, I have always been surrounded by books from every different genre. Ever since she was little, she has always enjoyed reading, whether it was putting her into the streets of London in the 1800s or terrifying her through the works of Stephen King. Since she was always around books, she brought that influence to me and my sister ,especially when she would read to us or even now when she recommends books to us.

Little Rabbit Foo Foo

This book was a huge part of my childhood because when I was a younger me and my sister would both run to my mom's room and she would read us a book once or twice a week. One of our favorite books was "Little Rabbit Foo Foo" because it was basically a song. It also holds sentimental value in the way that it was a story from my mom's childhood.

Of Mice and Men

I read "Of Mice and Men" when I was in eighth grade, and it was such a heartwarming story, in my opinion, because it showed the bounds of friendship. I also read this during COVID, which was a hard time for me because I was not as close with my friends, and I was more isolated mentally, besides physically, so it showed the importance of friendship to me in many ways. This book will always have a place in my heart for its several themes and how they were carried out.

The Notebook

For me, the Notebook was not just a cheesy romance but it just made me look at life a whole different way. It showed me how powerful human emotions and will can be which heavily influenced my life. It taught me valuable lessons such as you cannot let things just happen to you and you have to work for what you want.

Beloved

Beloved was a great book in a lot of different ways. I enjoyed reading it and sympathizing with the characters. It gave me a whole different perspective on Slavery and how it affected everyone in so many different ways. It also presented to me the complexities of motherhood, and as someone who has always loved kids and wants to have my own one day, how my future kids could have an effect on me and how I view life.

Favorite thing about reading

When reading not only do I love being able to experience different times and worlds of creativity but, I am able to have more of an understanding about perspective. I am able to understand more about where people come from and how someones past can mold their present. This is something that I have always taken from my reading because it allows me to sympathize more with people in my day to day life.

Ever since I was little I only read fiction. A big challenge that I have always had in reading was branching out and reading more books geared towards real life and peoples real experiences. This is mainly because I have always found comfort in the fact that the stories were fake.

Ever since I was little, I never had a reading level. I always picked up a book and started reading and if I found it boring or too hard to read I would put it down and pick up and different one. So naturally, I never really had a reading level which made my reading very inconsistent.

Going forward, one of my biggest reading goals would be to start reading more than just buying books because I tend to buy several books but only read a few of the books I buy thinking I will read the other ones at a later date.

Tales of Ancient Egypt

Upon entering middle school, I got very into mythology. I thought it was so intriguing how each culture and religion had their view of how things worked. It originally started with Egyptian mythology and eventually worked its way into Greek mythology until I ended my phase with Roman mythology. However, this book started my whole adventure into the world of mythology.
