Christianity: The big 4 by Alexander Goldberg

Please spend some time with your group researching the following questions. Each of you will be assigned in groups one of the 4 major branches of Christianity (Catholicism, Protestantism, Eastern Orthodox, Russian Orthodox) and asked to investigate the questions below (per usual, cite sources, no wikipedia, images are good, etc). All of the questions are the same for each branch. If time remains at the end of class we will go through each specific group and you will get an opportunity to present your findings. Please make sure to include your names as a group as well as what questions you focused on individually!

Origins: How and where did it start?
Split: Historically, how did this become a separate branch from the other branches of Christianity?
Doctrine: What are the specific creeds, ideas, doctrines of your branch?
Structure: Is there a hierarchy of leadership in this branch of Christianity? If so how does that work? Who is “in charge?”
Practice: Who can practice this version of the faith? What requirements are there for entry?
Tradition: are there any specific holidays, rituals, or rites associated with this branch?
Finally, where do we see this branch in the world today? (USE IMAGES)

The shift from the Catholic Church started in 1517 when Martin Luther came up with the 95 Theses - the start of the “Protestant Reformation.” The 95 Theses were a list by Luther, questioning many different aspects of Roman Catholicism. Of this list there are two core theses: 1) The Bible is the central religious authority 2) Salvation may only be reached by faith and not by deeds. Luther hoped to reform the Catholic Church, but instead planted the seed for a new branch of Christianity. This mainly took place in Northern Europe (Luther was from Germany) and slowly spread across the world.

They did not believe in hierarchical structure because they do not think a person needs help from a mediator in order to reach God. This changed during a reform. The highest leader is the senior pastor and is the person who serves God in the church and in charge of everything happening in the church. Then there are the pastors. In the protestants church, there are no priests. The pastors preach religious scriptures. Next, there are the “Elders or lay leaders,” who help to advise the church on various duties. The role of elders/lay leaders varies based on the church, but overall the job is to help the church in one way or another, whether that is being spiritual leaders or acts as a board of directors. Lastly, there are the deacons. The deacon is like an assistant minister, and helps to reach out to the poor and sick.

https://www.hierarchystructure.com/russian-orthodox-church-hierarchy/

The Russian orthodox have a very similar system to other groups of christians. In ascending order, the hierarchy is as follows, Archbishops, bishops, priests, the patriarch, the councils and the synod. The councils and the synod have ultimate control. They have the power to canonize saints, and control all of the roles below them. Most of these people in the roles serve in them for at least 40 years, or usually their whole life and are encouraged to hold themselves of high esteem and also be very well educated in theocratic studies. Roles like bishops and priests are also essentially given land to rule over, these are called parishes. They control all the religious activities in these areas and regulate practice.
