Directions: Re-read the following quotes from TEWWG that reference the mule. Then, add a note to answer the following questions: Why do you think Hurston references the mule and the idea of the mule so often? What do you think it symbolizes?

"The days and the years went on. Janie liked to listen to the people in the town--their inside jokes and secret lives. The town was especially fond of teasing Matt Bonner about his mangy old mule. The mule was dirty and old and showed up randomly in other peoples’ kitchens and gardens. It was an animal with real determination and the townspeople thought it was ridiculous. Janie thought the townspeople were being unnecessarily harsh to the mule. Jody gave Matt $5 to buy the mangy animal and to let it rest for once. Once it finally died, they held a mock funeral for the mule. The townspeople chanted and sang and left its rotting carcass."
