One developmentally appropriate classroom activity for comprehension that will accommodate the needs of various learners and their levels are to encourage the children to think and talk about shared oral stories and books that are read aloud. You can also help by exposing them to a lot of interesting words. Vocabulary is the key to comprehension. Some activities that you can do is predict, five-finger retell, active reading, mind movies, and tell me about it. You can also map out books, take picture walks, and be a story detective. Doing thses activity will help all your students have a better understanding of what reading comprehension is.

Some resources that can assist families with developing their children's vocabulary and comprehen skills at home are they can read with them. Children also love listening to stories. You can also listen to your children's stories and children love to tell stories about themselves as well. While you are reading stories you can point out meaningful words as children are very curious about print in their environment. One resource that will help with our diverse families/learners are worksheets that can be printed off from different websites and sent home with our students. This will help our families that do not have acces to internet or devices at home. We must also remember whatever resource we chose for our families they must be age appropriate and the learning style fits the needs of the students.

Supporting Students with and without Exceptionalities

How you can support students with and without expecptionalities needs is by building their curiosity about words, engage in interactive read-alouds, focus on connections, select vocabulary to teach, and tailor vocabulary instruction for who use AAC. There are 5 strategies that will help improve reading comprehension with students with learning needs. These strategies could include but are not limited to exlicit instruction, prior knowledge, theme identification, graphic organizers, and literature circles. Helping to teach student with disabilities vocabulary can be done by implementing what is called a semantic map. You can use this with students that have a disabilities or who does not. Recalling the meaning of words, how multiple words or concepts "fit together". Teacher will find that using a semantic map, combined with explicit instruction and practice opportunities is an effective way of expanding student's vocabulary and supporting their context knowledge.
