Wow! Only 20 years later? You would think that, as the sheriff, something like this happening in your town you would make sure it never happened again. You'd be wrong. Sure, the sheriff eventually gets people to come in to train his deputies, but not because he went out and looked for it. I think he felt obligated, but would have preferred to just "leave it in the past."

I found it interesting that Hillary Swank was criticized because she took the role playing a trans-man when she is a cisgender woman. Especially considering all of the good things that came out of the film. The director was also criticized because she's a cisgender lesbian. I'm guessing, but maybe the trans community wasn't as large when the film was made and it was much harder to find a trans person to direct the film or star in it?

Yet another actress who is afraid of the backlash for saying anything about the films she's been in because she's not LGBTQ. I wouldn't care what the orientation of the person portraying me in a film is. As long as they're doing it in good faith and to the best of their abilities, I don't care. Someone like Chloe Sevigny, however, should be commended for taking a chance on a role that could have destroyed her career. The fact that she took the role, and many other roles like it, shows that she actually cares about the LGBTQ community.

The fact that they had to put a disclaimer at the beginning apologizing for the mistake of labeling Teena Brandon as "butch" instead of "Transgender" or "male" shows how difficult the subject is to navigate. Also, that the author considers this movie a "romance story" is pretty sad.

According to this article, Matthew Shepard, the young, gay man who was killed 6 years after Brandon, was killed for drugs, not because he was gay. Why is that relevant to a discussion on "Boys Don't Cry?" The movie wasn't made until the year after Shepard was killed which made national headlines. He came from a prominent family, unlike Brandon, and he was gay, not trans. All things that made Shepard's story more "palatable" to the American public.

That being said, I'm a little torn on what should be put on Brandon's tombstone. On one hand, I feel like I would want to put the name I gave my daughter at birth, but on the other, it's a disservice to Brandon to not put the name he wanted to go by. The epitaph says, "Daughter, Sister, & Friend."
