Cuba was one of the many countries colonized by Spain. They were colonized in 1492. Soon the Spanish had to fight many costly battles to keep Cuba under their control. But in 1898 the U.S.A defeated and took over the Spanish in Cuba. In the 1900's Cuba became economically isolated as their relations with the Soviet Union got stronger.

Cuba does not border any countries as there are no other nations on the island, however Cuba is near many countries in the Caribbean. For example, Cuba is north of Jamaica and south of the United States of America. The coordinates of Cuba are 21° N, 77° W.

Climate

Since Cuba isn't that big of a country it only has a tropical climate. The benefit of the climate is that Cuba gets a good amount of water. Every year Cuba gets about 1335 mm of water each year which helps people harvest a larger food supply for the island.

The drawback of the region is that it is common for hurricanes to happen in September to October which can negatively impact the food supply.

Natural Resources

Some natural resources found in Cuba are iron, copper, and nickel. These are important as they are used to make equipment for many people's jobs. Since Cuba has access to these materials they can grow the economy as the people have more access to jobs. A growing economy not only boosts the economy but also contributes to a growing population. These natural resources can also be used to make weapons and battle ships which can help defend the island and grow the economy.

A drawback of this is that iron is very susceptible to rusting so Cubans might have to work extra to get the needed iron.

Cuba has access to 34 ports. This allows for easy trade with neighboring countries. This can boost the economy with easy access to trading goods. All the ports also provide jobs for people. There are 123 airports, which allows for people to tour the island. This may allow for some people to decide to permanently live there or leave. This also means that even when Cuba is in a drought they can trade with other countries to keep themselves afloat. Cuba can also trade to get resources they need for economic and technological growth.

Pico Turquino/Zapata Swamp

Pico Turquino

Pico Turquino is the highest point in Cuba at 1,974 m. This makes it a popular destination for tourists when visiting Cuba. It is also the only recorded place of snow in Cuba. The name is believed to be a corrupted version of the phrase for "turquoise peak". One drawback is that it is harder to access the south east part of Cuba as it is blocked by Pico Turquino.

Zapata Swamp

Zapata Swamp is a habitat for the world's smallest bird species, a bee hummingbird. Within the Zapata Swamp are many different areas that are for environmental preservation, such as Zapata Swamp Natural Reserve, and Las Salinas wildlife sanctuary, which is part of the larger Ciénaga de Zapata Biosphere Reserve. It is in total over 6,000 km² and the largest protected area, not only in Cuba, but also in the Caribbean. One drawback is that in the salt marsh areas it is only 2 meters deep making it hard for transportation.

The characteristics of Cuba are different from many countries around the world. This also affects Cubans as they have a certain culture because of what was given to them through their environmental resources and history. Due to the location of Cuba the only climate is tropical and hurricanes frequently posing a threat at particular times of year. Since Cuba has access to many resources it can trade their resources for money or rely less on other countries for resources. The benefits of geography are that there are many resources and living space for growth in Cuba's civilization. A drawback of geography is the area that Cuba is located in a place that faces frequent hurricanes at a certain time of year. This can be costly as the hurricanes can destroy many things which are hard to replace or cost a lot of money. The landforms can have drawbacks like the water in the Zapata Swamp is too shallow, and that the Pico Turquino blocks off a section of Cuba along with other mountains. The most important theme of geography for Cuba would be movement as it allows for travel and trade. Travel and trade are important for a civilization to thrive because if there is no trade then it will be hard to grow a good economy, and be successful in keeping up with technology with the rest of the world as you need trading to get resources that aren’t local to your civilization.
