In Nairobi, protests have erupted due to a death of 31-year-old teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang while in police custody. Initially the authorities said she died by suicide. However, autopsy revealed that her death was by the police's head trauma and neck compression. Thousands of people marched and demanded justice. The tensions rose after police used weapons, but the Kenyan government promised an investigation and several officers were arrested.

Iran and Israel

A surging conflict has developed between Israel and Iran, with each country attacking one another for the past four days. The attacks began when Israel conducted airstrikes against Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing over 200 people and destroying key infrastructure. After Israel's attack, Iran retaliated by launching well-over 400 missiles and drones towards Israel, successfully striking cities such as Tel Aviv and Haifa. While many of these had been intercepted by both Israelis and the U.S. missile defense shield, some did strike targets in Israel, killing civilians, destroying property and inflicting widespread damage to infrastructure. There has been much to fear - that their respective conflicts could draw in neighbouring states in the Middle East, escalating to a regional war.

East China Sea

China's Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers have exercised for the first time, operating together in joint naval exercises in the Western Pacific. The exercises had fighter and helicopters flying near the Japanese territories of Okinotorishima and southeast of Iwo Jima. This marks a significant extension of Chinese military activities and a rapidly expanding area of power and influence far beyond China's territorial borders. Both Japan and Taiwan have expressed concern at the development of military operations seen as threatening to regional stability. China stated the exercises were carried out on a routine basis in accordance with international law.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing 241 people onboard and at least 30 on the ground. The plane struck a nearby medical college building just minutes into the flight to London. Investigators are concentrating on whether the crash was caused by thrust from an engine, flap on an wing, or issue with the landing gear. Both of the airplane's black boxes were recovered and have been handed over to Indian and international aviation investigators. In response, India has ordered inspections of all Boeing 787s and temporarily grounded several flights.

St Peter's Square

Pope Leo XIV was installed as the 267th pope of the Roman Catholic Church at a Mass in St. Peter's Square on May 18, 2025. He is formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost and the only American pope. In his homily, he spoke of compassion, humility and caring for the poor, would refer to St. Augustine when he asked us to make the Church a healing presence. Over 200,000 people were in attendance, including world leaders, civil leaders, and religious leaders. In the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV was conferred the pallium and Fisherman's Ring as is customary for the papacy.

Lima, Peru

On June 15, 2025, a magnitude of 5.6 earthquake occurred in the central coast of Peru, in Lima, the capital city of Peru, and the nearby port of Callao. The earthquake occurred at 11:35 am local time. The epicenter was 23 km southwest of Callao. Sadly, in Lima, a person was dead when a wall collapsed due to the earthquake. In addition to the tragedy, 43 people sustained injuries, with 18 hospitalized. Along with injuries and fatality, significant physical damage was sustained, including a landslip on Costa Verde Highway a collapsed ceiling in one shopping center and disruption to public transport.
