Although already defined by Ratliff, this term is applied differently in meme culture. The repetition in these songs (lyrics or a certain beat) make it easy to match up a video (or video clips) and the way these go together in such a formulaic way creates humor which catches on and develops with each new rendition. Lyrical repetition includes songs like, "You Spin me Round" and "I Believe I Can Fly" while the songs I go into depth with are examples of repetition of a certain beat. (I go more into detail there)

Meme songs utilize repetition diffrently than what others say:

In his novel, Every Song Ever: Twenty Ways to Listen in an Age of Musical Plenty, Ratliff explains that “Repetition is a smart psychological operation—a way to make you focus on all that is in fact nonrepetitive. The music seems to stay put, while you (or your perceptions) change. Then you stay put while it changes. It suggests infinity or eternity, basically. But only by distant representation. We couldn’t have actual infinity or eternity in art. We would hate it" (Ratliff 14). To put it simply, a part of a song is repeated often enough that any variations seem more jarring and memorable so once you hear part of it you’re already anticipating what comes next. When most scholars talk about the memetics of music they often take a similar stance to Ratliff’s and argue that music is considered a “meme” when the repetition of a melody or certain lyrics conjures up a memory of what comes next. Steven Jan from the University of Huddersfield directly reflects this statement by saying, “If the memory of a melody can be accessed by hearing its opening notes, this implies that these notes themselves have independent memetic status.”
