         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1941 the Germans attacking Russia began to stall outside of Moscow and Leningrad. By 1942 Hitler had a new offensive targeting the Russia's southern oil fields. At Stalingrad, the Germans surrounded the city, as winter began to commence. The battle was long, such as fighting two weeks for a single building. By November, the Russians surrounded the Germans, effectively trapping them. The Germans surrendered in January 1943. By early 1944, Russian forces were advancing into Eastern Europe.</div>]]></description>

Although they distrusted each other (Stalin feared that the West was trying to eradicate Communism, the West feared that Stalin would try to take over Europe). <br>POLAND: In attempts to keep the peace between the Big Three, the Western Leaders allowed Stalin to slightly expand his country so that it fit into the Nazi-Soviet pact. <br>WAR STRATEGY: The Western leaders did not fully yield to Stalin as they refused to start a Western front, thus keep the pressure on Russia.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>General Tojo from Japan ordered a surprise attack on the US. On December 7 of 1941, Japanese air forces attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. About 2,400 people died from this event. Many battleships and air crafts were destroyed as well.  President Rosevelt asked congress to declare war on Japan. But on December 11, the allies of Japan, Germany and Italy, declared war on the US.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In June of 1941, Hitler broke the Nazi-Soviet pact by invading the Soviet Union. He wanted resources and land so he could expand Germany. He also wanted to defeat his rival Stalin. Germany caught Stalin by surprise when they attacked with about 3 million troops. The Soviets lost about two and a half million soldiers trying to fight the Germans. Though Germans made it pretty far, by the time winter came they were not prepared for the cold weather and thousands of German soldiers died.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>German bombers began appearing at night starting on September 7 of 1940. All night long for 57 nights straight, high explosives were showered and bombs were dropped down on London. London was destroyed in many parts and thousands lost their lives. Fortunately, London didn't break under the "Blitz". People continued with their daily lives when it was clear of danger and the king and queen even joined Londoners underground in shelters to support them.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>During the time of Dunkirk, German forces headed towards Paris. Italy declared war on France and attacked them. France was demoralized so they surrendered. In June of 1940, Hitler made the French sign the surrender documents, and following that, Germany occupied the northern part of France. Some French escaped and worked from the outside to liberate their land, while others worked from within France and used guerrilla tactics against Germans. </div>]]></description>

         <title>DUNKIRK</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>German forces attacked the French and British by attacking them through a forest called Ardennes in Belgium. The German troops bypassed the Maginot Line and the British forces ended up being trapped between the Nazi Army and the English Channel. The desperate British sent all available ships, vessels, and really any boat they had to rescue stranded troops off the beaches of Dunkirk. Even though the Germans were attacking by air, 300,000 troops were able to be brought to safety in Britain. This event was important because it raised the morale of the British.</div>]]></description>

Two days after the invasion, Britain and France declared war on Germany. This was the start of World War II. After WWI, people knew how bad war could be because of modern technology, so the idea of another war was unbearable. However Hitler did invade and ended up taking over the country.          <description><![CDATA[<div>On March 12, 1938, German troops march into Austria to annex the German-speaking nation for the Third Reich. Nazis conspired to seize the Austrian government by force and unite their nation with Nazi Germany. March 12, Hitler accompanied German troops into Austria, where enthusiastic crowds met them. Hitler appointed a new Nazi government, and on March 13 the Anschluss was proclaimed. Austria existed as a federal state of Germany until the end of World War II. Becasuse Germany now had Austria for support they were able to have a larger invading force with more resources all around</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The first way Hitler broke the Treaty was over Germany’s armed forces. &nbsp; In 1934, he destroyed the League of Nations Disarmament Conference by demanding equality of arms with France and Britain – this broke the Treaty because it had set up the League with the stated aim of achieving disarmament. &nbsp; At first, Hitler broke the Treaty’s terms by building up his army in secret, drilling volunteers with spades instead of rifles. &nbsp; Then, in 1935, he openly held a huge rearmament rally. If Germany were to never get away with this then there wouldn't have been   another world war.</div>]]></description>
