Functions of language used in ACO

One of the most obvious functions for the use of nadsat in ACO is that it allows the reader to empathize easily with the protagonist. The use of the fictional language protects the reader from the full horror of his violence by creating a buffer between the actual events and what the reader comprehends. It is difficult to connect and empathize with somebody as cruel and violent as Alex (and with no apparent morals), but by using words which shield the reader from horrific events – it becomes more bearable. An example is the famous break-in scene, where Alex and his friends sexually assault a couple in their home.

For the reader, the Slavic words suggest communist dictatorship, the society of Darkness at Noon, violence without moral value and without hope. With that being said, the use of nadsat can also be viewed as a way to emphasize the violence surrounding the youth. An example from the book which can help explain this, is when the two psychiatrists comment on Alex’s use of language. Later on in the novel, it becomes clear that older people know about argot, but they cannot speak it.

Nadsat also provides the reader with some form of enjoyment, with puns and repetition. The article gave the following example from the book, “The chelloveck (man) sitting next to them was already far gone on the drug. His glazzies (eyes) were glazed” – a rather apparent pun. An example of repetition that can be rather amusing to the reader is, “His slovos (words) were slurred. All this time in the background you can hear the goloss (voice) of the singer, crooning a real starry (old) oldie, You Blister My Paint, a more sophisticated play on words here. If we hadn't already guessed, the author would show us by such repetitions that here at least he was pulling our legs.

Some also believe that the use of language in the novel is to warn the reader about some gruesome and violent events which is to come. Burgess is careful to allow context to offer definitions. When Alex talks about his intentions to “tolchock some old veck in an alley and viddy him in his blood”, it is clear what is being said, yet often nadsat is used as a language of opposition, something that establishes the droogs as an isolated counter-cultural group, even before their brutal behavior is described. In the article, Evans also explains that the language use can to some extent be seen as used to create the atmosphere of a nightmare.
