Pope wasn’t always a Longview citizen, having been born in Alexandria, Louisiana in November of 1966. She, her older sister, and her parents moved to Longview when she was two when a new job opportunity at Eastman was presented to her father. There, she grew up to graduate at Pine Tree High School in 1985 before moving to Waco, Texas to attend Baylor University with her high school sweetheart (Pope interview). Pope graduated with a degree in Elementary Education with a focus in reading, going on to have their first son in 1992, and teach in Waco. Their growing family moved to Dallas where her husband got a job in law and Carol took on a part-time job as an adjunct professor, supervising student teachers at Texas Women’s University. In 1995, their daughter was born, and she became a stay-at-home mother, raising her children; Pope tutored students in writing as much as possible during this time, as she could not bring herself to truly let teaching go. Carol and her family moved back to Longview where she delivered their youngest and final child, a son born in 1998. She continued the full-time job of motherhood, until the rough divorce with her husband in 2007 (Pope interview). Pope picked up a job at Kilgore College, working with the program Upward Bound- a program for aspiring first generation college students- while also going back to school for counseling. After working at Kilgore, she moved on to Sabine High School where she became a senior counselor, directing them in their endeavors and encouraging them to go to college. It was here Pope was when her parents retired and she started working at her mother’s education base, Sylvan; gradually taking over until she legally purchased the franchise and made it her own place of educational output.

What can one person’s story tell us about big historical forces?

After having listen to Pope's testimony of the time she was growing up and reading an analysis of the time, we have learned to appreciate what educators do for us. They are the first one to truly help us find our way and influence us into accepting responsibility for ourselves and workload with pride and integrity. Having lived through our current time, it is safe to say that the value of community has dropped and it is chivalrous act Carol Pope is achieving by integrating higher minded ideologies back into society. Pope's story teaches us that holding accountability and responsibility early on in turn increases the value of community and education for future generations to come. If one could take something from this, let it be the sense of pride and adoration for a civilization that has come together to raise the future. Anyone can become an educator, implanting in others the will to learn and take for themselves the right to also pass the knowledge on. They only need to step forward and keep an open mind.
