Social Exchange Theory (SET)

THEORY
In my words and how I understand it, SET is where the person will often times be perceived as a selfish, self-serving, and self-preserving person because the relationships they build and maintain to keep is reliant by its worth. It can be driven to either one's satisfaction or want for stability (I believe both factors can be evaluated, not just either one of it).

STORYTIME
Honestly, among all the theories, this was the easiest for me to digest all because it applies to me. One particular experience of mine happened in my first year of college.

I was paired up with a person (I will call them Person A) for a certain class activity. Because I want it to be smooth sailing, I built a rapport because what I really want in a non-individual project is to experience synergy (and see if we match, seeking a long-term partnership/dynamic). The activity is involves video editing, and I for one am not confident in my skills in that area (all I can do is timed-cuts). I was so relieved to learn that my partner prefers doing the editing, leading my plan to stick to her whenever there is a video-related activity.

I acknowledge that the skills I have leans more on the writing and analysis side, so when I learned that Person A's weakness are my strength, I saw that as a great opportunity for us to help each other. Come second semester of the same year, I paired up with them in a subject that focuses specifically on analysis. Let's just say that Person A amazingly became dead weight to me. But I tried to shrug it off, knowing that we all have our strengths and weaknesses, and believing that they'll make up for it.

They did not.

One day, another group activity happened, and (i forgot the sequence but I remembered) I consciously paired up with a different person. And that person's group quota is already full, leaving Person A to look for a different group (I will call it the New Group).

You could say I was traumatized (a very strong term, but I was really stressed) for what happened. I genuinely felt bad for leaving the them, but can you really put the blame on me? The worth is not worthing, and the synergy i was searching for is absolutely no where (even just casually talking with them takes a mental toll; and I am not being rude here).

Back to the present, now with the New Group, it was such a great improvement! I had a great time, and though there are times where one is heavier, ALL still try their best to make up for it immediately. They don't place an expecting debt where they say "next activity, I'll definitely help". They try to do their best, even if at times 'wala sa hulog'. You can see their efforts. They try. They apologize. They acknowledge. And they

And for me, that is enough.

ANALYSIS
I believe and know that I've applied the two core concepts of SET from my experience. I evaluated the worth of my relationship with Person A and with the New Group. The former having their costs piling up, and the rewards being no where now. I was no longer satisfied, and there is definitely an unstable display of power—if you will, between the two of us. I am a student, hindi kargador (not to disregard respecting kargadors out there, don't twist my words).

As for with the New Group, costs still exists, but its not alarmingly waving a big red flag at me. The reward is of at least above satisfactory level (I'm being pragmatic here, I don't want to show bias asdhfkjad), and definitely needed and appreciated for both my emotional and mental health. Hopefully, there will be no drama that leads to bad blood or something between us, because they are sitting prettily at the top (amongst my most honorable mentions) as people who are making my college experience worthwhile.

ew emotions hajsfkjdhs i am an intj
