This book was GREAT. I really loved all the creativity and the real life counter-part! It was really cool to see what it looked like in real life, and it was really cool! I really liked how the seven most important things lined up with Arthur's life and the things he had to overcome without his Dad. I also really liked hearing about how great Mr.Hampton's masterpiece was even though it was all made out of "junk" you could find in the trash or out in people's yards. It was really cool. I also really liked how Mr.Hampton called Arthur a Saint for throwing the brick at him and "saving his master piece". One of my favorite parts was when Arthur picked up the cardboard and it said "FEAR NOT" on it. I thought that was a nice touch.

I read this book last year, but I loved getting to read it a second time! My favorite part was when it was May, and James asked Arthur to go buy some of the Nesbitt's orange soda. Then after they drank them the two of them put the bottles on the tree to empty out the things they weren't proud of. I also loved when James and Arthur were talking about Arthur's dad, and all the good things about his dad like the Pinewood Derby. The Seventh Most Important Thing was one of my favorite books this year, and last year! I need to read some of her (Shelley Pearsall the amazing author of The Seventh Most Important Thing) other books! I am so excited for the next graders to get to hear this amazing story. Last year, after I read The Seventh Most Important Thing I saw so many things differently with much more meaning!

I loved The 7th Most Important Thing . I loved all of the emotion, and feelings added to the story. When I looked up a picture of the Throne of the Third Heaven, I thought that it was in NO WAY possible to have made something that beautiful out of junk. I showed my mom a picture of it, and said, "Pick 3 things that you think this is made out of." Then she said, "Umm. . . okay, gold, silver, and . . . diamonds." I laughed so hard. I then told her that the master piece was made out of light bulbs, foil, mirrors, pieces of wood, glass bottles, coffee cans, and cardboard. She didn't believe me at first, so I had to zoom in to show her my point. She was amazed. I'm so glad that someone has showed us this story! Thank you!

I loved your book The 7th Most Important Thing! I loved the symbolism you put behind all of the 7 things that Arthur collected for James Hampton! I also like how it is based off of a true story and the way you portrayed James Hampton's work was very similar to the image in real life. I had no idea that it was based off a real piece of artwork! I think to see this masterpiece in real life must have been like being in a dream! I came up with my own meanings for the 7 most important things that apply to my life:
1. Light Bulbs- Christianity or the Light of God
2. Foil- Creativity, all the things you can do with a piece of it.
3. Mirrors- Beauty that comes from within.
4. Pieces of Wood- My parents, for constructing good character.
5. Glass Bottles- Transparency and honesty.
6. Coffee Cans- Energy and willingness to get up and MOVE!
7. Cardboard- Imagination, with all the possibilities of a good-sized cardboard box!
Thank you so much for writing this wonderful book for people all over the world to enjoy! I think this book has such a wonderful message- Out of Darkness comes light, or Beautiful things can be made out of not-so beautiful things! Anyway, your book is amazing and someday I hope to be an amazing author just like you! Seriously, my dream has always been to be an author, and I'm writing many different books right now! I really hope I'll someday be as good as you! Anyway, back to the most amazing book ever, I love how James Hampton's 7 most important things tie into Arthur's life. It has so must symbolism! I love how his father's death is at first the worst thing ever, but then he realizes that maybe it isn't the worst thing. He starts to realize that other things in life are more important than being sad all the time about your loses. It sends such a good message!

The 7th Most Important Thing was a very beautiful and inspiring book. James Hampton created this beautiful piece of art for all to see. His art looks like it's made of gold, diamonds, silver, and other jewels. You would have never guessed it was made of lightbulbs, foil, mirrors, pieces of wood, glass bottles, coffee cans and cardboard. I loved the concept of making Heaven out of broken things. And the story James Hampton told about it, oh! Such beautiful writing! Shelley Pearsall has such an awesome writing style! The connections to real life and the 7 Things was so creative, and so clever! It would have taken me years just to come up with the concept! When we finished the book, I wanted to steal it and have it for myself because I loved it so much! I recommend it to every one! When I meet someone, and they say "Oh, I've read that book!" I'm like, "You're my best friend now, come with me!" And then I drag them to the library so I can read books with them and make them read The 7th Most Important Thing Again!

I LOVED this book! All of the different things Arthur had to collect (the 7 most important things) symbolized an aspect of his life. The concept of taking something that actually happened but not all of the information was known about is intresting. Especially because it was not common day, this book is set apart from all other fiction books. I am so glad that I got a chance to read this book. I wonder if the 7 most important things have a relation to St. James' life. It would be interesting to have the book written from Mr. Hampton's point of view, or even better, have a book explaining his backstory. If the book was written about his backstory you could see more of why he did things. Groovy Jim said that he always did things for a reason, so maybe he knows more about Mr. Hampton than he lets on. The theme war can be turned in to something beautiful is reoccuring in this book. James Hampton's image, (people thought that he was just collecting junk, which has a bad connotation, to people recognizing how great his work really is.) Arthur's image (everyone thought he was going to turn out to be a criminal to people recognizing him saving the work of art) and many other countless examples of the theme.

This book really made me think what art is. It was cool to see someone who had a different perspective on life. After hearing the seven things that related to Arthur's life I did how the seven things relate to my life. I'm not gonna list them all out but: cardboard represents my brothers, because they always make forts and robots out of old boxes. I'm really glad that we read this book, because Mrs. Mueller is the best at choosing books that nobody would really think to read until now. I also like how this whole thing started with Arthur throwing a brick at a junk man, but then it slowly reveals who he really is. When we saw the picture at the end it was like getting the wind knocked out of you just seeing what we have been reading. It was my dream to see that master piece like every book, and usually it's nothing like you visioned that's exactly how it was. For some reason I was picturing eye balls and broken wings. For Arthur I feel like James Hampton was more like a grandpa to him, because he told stories and did the things a grandfather would do. GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely loved this book! It lead to a lot of big ideas such as, What is art? I've never really thought about it until Mrs. Mueller brought it up while we read it. I think it really depends on who it is by and what their goal for it is. For example, I think an author's idea of art is something that will leave a quiet, but powerful effect on the reader. Like the 7th Most Important Thing did. It really made me think of putting myself in other people's shoes and it will help me with that in life. Arthur had to put himself in Jame's Hampton's shoes to really get the idea of his art. I kind of had to put myself in Arthur's shoes to really understand why he threw the brick and how it changed him throughout the book. Over all, this was one of my all time favorite read out loud books we have done in fifth or sixth grade. My favorite part was at the end where they fast forward 7 years to when the Smithsonian Institution revealed the Throne of the Third Heaven to the public. It tied the book over very well and it is one of my favorite endings. Thank you so much Shelley Pearsall for writing this amazing book. Please write more!!!

The Seventh Most Important Thing was my favorite read aloud Mrs.Mueller has ever has done. I thought it was a really good idea to write a book based on a strange piece of art work. After she read the book and I saw a picture of the the Throne of the Third Heaven, I was amazed it was all made out of "junk". When Arthur threw the brick at Mr.Hampton I thought it was a bit extreme but I also understood why and it was a great way to get the plot started.

This book was amazing. When you read a really good book, you can picture everything that is happening in the book inside of your head, picture all of the characters, the setting, picture what is happening and what their voices are like and all of the details. To me, that is what signifies a really good book. But when you read an absolutely amazing book, you can picture it all in your head, every single detail of what's happening, gut it kind of takes it to another level, you can actually feel like you are there, like you are experiencing the story yourself. Maybe you even make up new characters to put in the book and experience it in a new way, like you are actually one of the characters. This book was absolutely amazing. It just had so much meaning to it, like everything in the book has a deeper meaning than you would at first see. Kind of like Mr.Hampton said, when there is no vision, the people perish. Well, maybe kind of like that. I just thought that this book had a lot of meaning. I love all of the details and everything that was put together in this book, like puzzle pieces that had to be the right shape to fit together and to make the picture, which in this case, is this amazing story. Now to me, it's kind of like, "How could this book be any better?" And then I figure out that it's a true story and I'm just like "OMG! I just figured out how this book could be better! And it is better! I didn't know this was possible!" But really though, usually books that are based on true stories are like bla (at least to me) and those books are below the level of really good. But this book is absolutely amazing, which like the rarest of the rare among books that are based on true stories, and it takes amazing authors to write those kind of books and now I think I know who my new favorite author is. Even though I didn't really have a favorite author before. Another thing that I enjoyed is all of the cliffhangers that were in the book, I personally wrote a story before that was kind of long but not really, and I tried to put a lot of cliffhangers in it (because no story is quite complete without cliffhangers, kind of referring to the puzzle pieces that I mentioned before). But by writing that story, I truly figured out how difficult it can be to put cliffhangers into a story. But these cliffhangers become more important when it is being read aloud, because Mrs.Mueller is always stopping on cliffhangers and the whole class is like "Noooo! Don't stop now!!!" And Mrs.Mueller is like "I guess you have a reason to come back to school tomorrow!" Those cliffhangers are the best. Reading aloud is never quite complete without them. Another one of the puzzle pieces that I think put this book together is all of the details. This puzzle piece is one of the bigger ones that put together the story, and definitely very important. All of the details that were put into this book definitely make it absolutely amazing. I especially loved the beginning of the book, all of the details that were put into the beginning, it just made it absolutely amazing. While Mrs.Mueller was reading aloud, we had a discussion about all of the details that went into the beginning of the book and how it effected the mood that the reader would be experiencing. Through just the beginning you could tell it would be an absolutely amazing book, you already could feel like you were actually there.

I came up with my own the 7 most important things!
1.Match-Sometimes you get angry, you need to let yourself BURN out.
2.Paper-People are like paper, fragile with a single touch, and you do not want to TEAR your friendship.
3.Eraser-Sometimes the damage isn't always done, you cant completely erase it, but you can make it better. But sometimes you cant, so whats the POINT.
4.Baseball-You need to be accurate, have quick reflexes, and be able to make decisions. DO this correctly and you have a HOME RUN!
5.Duct Tape-Sometimes you give up, but don't! You should always STICK to a plan.
6.Glasses-Sometimes you cant see the difference from right and wrong. But you need to try, and see the light. That way you can be a SPECTACLE!
7.Hair Gel- STAND TALL

I also thought of a theory on the book. Is Arthur actually helping his father go to heaven? If we get a chance to Skype you, I would like to ask you about this theory. I think that the 7 most important things might also resemble his father. But I'm not sure. I think that fear not might refer to his father and how he eventually helped him get to heaven.

(Even though Mrs. Mueller would all ways always leave us off at cliff hanger no matter how much we would beg her not to she always would.) I also liked how all of the seventh most important things symbolized something in Arthur's life. And I still can't believe the The Throne Of The Third Heaven was real and that he (James Hampton) was real and that he actually made The Throne Of The Third Heaven was actually made out trash and discarded items. Some of my things that I chose as my own Seven Most Important Things and one of them was weather, I chose this because I think that weather symbolizes life in that weather is always changing and is pretty unpredictable (no matter what the weather man says) and always keeps you guessing.

I loved coming in everyday and knowing that we got to listen too the Seventh Most Important Thing. I loved how Arthur evolved through the book. He started out in Juvy. Then when he got back out of jail he had to do a trial. Then when he saved Squeak nobody believed him that Arthur had saved Squeak. One thing he got out of that was a friend named Squeak. Then Mr. Hampton died, and the landlord wanted throw his masterpiece away. Sure the masterpiece was made of trash but, it still looks beautiful. Then later on Arthur found out why 7 is so great. Apparently 7 means perfection. My 7 most important things are wood.

1.Wood would remind me of when I played basketball. I always had good sportsmanship. So wood stands for sportsmanship.

2.Next is coffee mugs. I chose coffee mugs because my dad drinks coffee. So the mugs would stand for family.

3.Next would be baseballs. Baseballs would remind me of how to joke around. In baseball I always end up with a team that likes to joke around. So baseballs would stand for fun. Next I would like glue bottles, because glue holds something together. Like holding together a team, people would call you the glue of the team. Also glue is like a bond for something. Like friendship is a type of glue because it keeps people together. So glue stands for friendship.

4. Next is books, because so many books have taught me lessons. Also books keep me awake on the darkest nights and help me sleep on the brightest day. Pun intended. So books would stand for you can always learn something.

I am still thinking on the last three. I wish I had them right now so I could share them. Overall I think The Seventh Most Important Thing is an awesome book and will beat the competition.

The Seventh Most Important Thing was an amazing book! I thought it was really clever how the author used the Seventh Most Important Thing's as structure for the book. Mr. Hampton's definition of art is to turn death and war into something beautiful. I made my own Seventh Most Important Things and it was really fun to make my own connections to the book.
1. Paper- In my family, we use paper a lot, to label garden seeds, to remember to feed the dogs, to making paper airplanes with my brother and even completing homework.
2. Music- In my house, music is everywhere. From my piano to my flute, to my brother's recorder, both wooden and plastic, and also to the sounds of my brother's and my horrible singing of the Ricola jingle. RI-CO-la.
3. Books- There are books everywhere my family goes. To Diary of a Wimpy Kid fanned out through my brother's bedroom, to the Horse Illustrated magazine that is sitting on my desk waiting for me. Also to the books out in my garage, from my grandma, waiting to be put on a shelf.
These are all of the most important things that I came up with so far, and I hope to make more in the future!

One of the things that especially interested me in this book was the structure. I like to write books in my spare time so I like to pay attention to these things. :-) I have always admired writers' ability to take reality and tweak it slightly to make a book. It always so amazing to find out at the end of a book that some part of the book is true! For example, when I saw the picture of Mr. Hampton's masterpiece I was in awe that he made it all out of discarded objects he found in the garbage. I have always wanted to write a historical fiction book about a girl changing the past from what it originally was to what we all know in history books today. I have always found tweaking reality quite complex and difficult, and have always wanted some advice on that topic, or to help my writing in general. Now, onto my response about this wonderful book. I think it is also interesting to make the main character, the protagonist seem like a bad person. When an author does this it really helps to show the whole redemption of the character. At first, almost no one really liked Arthur in our class, he seemed like a horrible person but once we learned about his background we felt sympathy for him. Strangely enough, when you read the book you feel bad for Arthur even though what he did was wrong. This book really makes you think because when you heard about the seven most important things I started to wonder what are my 7 most important things. I also have a bunch of questions after the book. What came first, the storyline or the list of the Seven Most Important Things? Was one based off the other? Ah! This book just makes me so amazingly happy! It also gives me so many creative ideas for my future books. I also can not believe authors actually read our responses! It is so cool! I loved the book and hope I can write ones just as good someday!

I mean, he addressed himself as "Saint James" so I was thinking, what if he was a saint?! Also, it kinda sounds fun to build heaven, I'm just saying! I made a list of 7 things that are in, or important to my life,
1. Glass Jars
2. Paper Plates
3. Tape
4. Tools
5. Plastic Cups
6. Envelopes
7.Cardboard Boxes
All of these are things that I use regularly, or like to use, and can be use in building something. It was incredible! I don't know how someone could even make such a thing out of GARBAGE!
For my Seven Most Important Things, I did the same list but different ways it relates to me and my family. I haven't gotten past my first thing. My list is probably going to be really long.
Light bulbs remind me of new ideas.
Foil makes me think of reviewing your accomplishments.

I loved this book! If I had to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate it 100! Even through all the cliffhangers that Mrs. Mueller made, I really understood the message and what the author was trying to help us learn about. I have a lot of questions for the author, such as; How did she find out about James Hampton and his masterpiece? And what was her inspiration to write about this? There's so many questions that haven't been answered, but at least our response questions were answered. My favorite line from The Seven Most Important Things would be one quote that I will never forget; "Some things in this world are meant to remain a mystery." I really like this line because it tells us that you can't know everything in our world, but the things we know are precious to us.

Also, when we got to see the actual masterpiece, I had tears. I seriously couldn't believe all of those things were made of trash. I guess Mr. Hampton follows this motto: "One man's trash is another man's treasure." because he used what looks like trash and useless junk to us, to make a glorious Smithsonian- deserving piece. In those pieces of trash, he sees another miracle to be made. And I really thought it was meaningful.

My favorite character has to be Barbara. She was sassy, girly, and annoying all mixed together. But through it all, she still loved her brother. Just like me! And she loved to be sassy and still imaginative. Also just like me. I mean, we would've been best friends. I really loved her!

I also liked Officer Billy. She was sassy, but still had a kind heart, sort of like a cookie. I loved this book!

The Seventh Most Important Thing was a great book. There was definitely a lot of symbolism in the book. One of the Items on the list actually was something that was a representation in my life. It was the light bulb because in Christianity the bible talks about how you need to shine your light through God. I was always intrigued and I was intrigued because Mrs. Mueller always seemed to be at a cliff hanger. I think that Mr. Hampton's definition of art is that he wants the world to be beautiful. There are different kinds of beautiful. He made his work of art out of what people call "Junk." One man's trash is another man's treasure. Mr. Hampton wanted to make something ugly into something new. The book was eluding to the Bible. Another one of my important things was soccer. It helped me with my discipline, commitment, and hard work because soccer requires all of those if you want to be a good soccer player. I learned that at a young age which is good because now that I am older it is second nature. 7 is the perfect number I have scored over 10 goals in 7 years

This was an extremely good book. My seven most important things are
1: Duct Tape - when you fall apart, stick your self back together
2: Music- Letting out your emotions
3.Cardboard Boxes- To give someone a gift or making something new
4. The Sun- Being able to see the light in people or seeing the bright side of things.
5. Books-Gaining new knowledge
6.My Dog- Companionship or a best friend or a friend for life
7. Ice cream- being able to calm down when you are angry
I was shocked when I saw the actual artwork. I thought that it would look different. I thought that it was a chair with a bunch of cardboard wings on it, and that the light bulbs covered the wings and sides of the chair, and that the foil also covered the chair, and that some of the cardboard was used to make the chair more comfortable, like a back or a cusion, or something like that. I thought that the coffee cans would be used for something like small places to put things or like a cup holder or I don't really know, but something like that. I had this theory that the ghost of Arthur's dad was possesing Mr.Hampton, and had this huge plan of seeing his son again, one last time before he could move on. But that theory was debunked, so I'm still trying to make a new theory.

Soccer - I have made so many friends and great memories because of soccer.
2. Walnuts - Behind our backyard is the woods. So, we have a lot of walnut trees in our backyard. In late spring and fall they always fall off. My brother and I go back and have to throw them all back into the woods. We have competitions to see who can throw farther. We have even played golf with them!
3. Eraser - In school I am always having to erase when I am writing. So an eraser is a very important thing. Also, you can "erase" bad things you have done in life. They may not be completely gone, but you can still "write" over them.
4.Dog - My family used to have two lab dogs. We unfortunately had to put them to "sleep". It was very sad. What made it even more sad was that we had to put down both of them of within the same week. We waited 2 years, then finally got a new dog. Our new dog is a black and white beagle. He is one and a half years old. Our new dog is so much fun but we will always remember our other dogs.
5. Glasses - I have had glasses since I was in third grade. I have had three different pairs of glasses. Glasses are something that makes me. . .ME!

The only problem is that I can not get back to edit my response, so I am just going to create a new one and copy what I have into this one. Ignore the other Matthew Hruska one.

This just added another layer of awesomeness to the story. One other thing that contributed to make this an absolutely amazing book was the characters. A book usually isn't as good when you aren't attached to the characters. The feeling you get with an absolutely amazing book isn't quite there when you can't feel connected to the characters as if your friends or something. I really loved most of the characters and how Shelly Pearsall made each character have their own unique personalities and character traits, making it so that you feel differently about each and everyone of the characters. When the author doesn't make the characters super awesome like that and your friend comes up and asks "Who was your favorite character in this book?" And then you're like "Uh, well . . . Larry is pretty cool . . . and Jerry is pretty cool . . . and Barry is pretty cool . . . and Terry is pretty cool . . . Garry is pretty cool too . . . and so is Sherry . . . and Mary too . . . I don't know, it's kind of hard to decide." You can tell that the author did not do that great with the characters, but in The Seventh Most Important Thing, I just absolutely love each of the characters. These are probably my top 5 favorite characters in this book. My favorite character is probably the main character-Arthur. I love everything about Arthur. I love how few people just think that he's just the boy from juvenile detention who throws bricks at people because he's a crazy lunatic, but really he is a whole lot more than that. I mean, when he was saving Squeak from the jocks, and the Vice Principal comes and assumes that Arthur is the one who caused the whole situation and was bullying Squeak, but really he wasn't. And then when the Vice Principal says that Squeak said that Arthur was helping him instead of bullying him, he thought that he said that just because he was scared to tell the truth. This was very interesting to me as Arthur really wasn't who many people thought he was. My second favorite character is definitely Squeak. He is super funny and super smart and super small ans super kind and super amazing. I love how he insisted to sit with Arthur at lunch even though Arthur was told never to put a finger on Squeak ever again, and I loved it when Squeak stood up on the cafeteria table with a sign when people were throwing things at them. I thought that part was pretty funny. My third favorite character is Mr.Hampton. I can't quite find a word to sum up Mr.Hampton, he is just . . . amazing. He just had this way of looking deeper into things and to find new meaning in everything, like all of the things he collected, he turned junk into a masterpiece. And he was just interesting, I mean, he made the third throne of heaven, and he called people saints, and just tons of things that make him super unique. He just seems like the ind of person that you could sit down and have a conversation with, but that conversation could go on for days. He was just such an amazing person. My fourth favorite character was Officer Billy. I loved her personality a lot too, like when she interrupted Arthur when he was talking and said stop! I also liked Arthur's first interpretation of Officer Billy, and when she brought him the amazing caramel popcorn, and Arthur was really surprised as he didn't expect something like that from Officer Billy. My fifth favorite character would probably be groovy Jim. You can tell he's a cool guys just by his name, Groovy Jim. I just love how cool this guy is, I mean, he was super kind to Arthur. I mean, he paid $50 bucks so that Arthur could still have the garage to keep Mr.Hampton's masterpiece in. I just think this dude is just amazingly cool. Another thing that I loved about this was all of the extra meaning behind the seven most important things. I loved the chapters that were titled one of the seven most important things. In those chapters one of the seven most important things's meaning in Arthur's life was revealed. It went to a new level and just applied these everyday materials to Something more, something that has a meaning in Arthur's life. I just thought it was amazing how the author applied these things and gave the a completely new meaning, a meaning that was important in Arthur's life. That was pretty cool. One other very small detail that I thought was very interesting was the cover of the book, it was a silver color that was reflective like tin foil. I thought this was pretty cool as the cover related to the seventh most important things in another cool way. I'm not sure if it's just the hardback books that have the silver cover though . . . because I'm pretty sure that the paperback copies are blue. Maybe I'm wrong though. I just kind of noticed that detail and thought it was pretty interesting. But over all, I just thought this book was . . . well, I don't really think I can sum this up without making this response twice as long. I mean, this is my reduced-version, I could make this twice as long and I could just keep going on and on and on and on and on describing all of the things that I loved about this book. But I wont do that because it is getting kind of late and I still have more homework to do, so . . . I will stop I guess. I really enjoyed reading this book and it was just absolutely amazing. I loved this book and it will probably on the top of my book recommendations list. One last thing, the pictures of the masterpiece were stunning, it is just so cool that it was actually made out of those simple items. So cool.

This book was so pleasing and exciting to read. The only problem I had was finding some answers to a few comprehension questions about quotes such as "I was turning into a block of boredom" and "She looked like a crazed hyena." This is not the book's fault though, so it's really just my problem. LOL I would rate this book 8/10.

What would you rate it?

I was not able to complete my response at school, so I decided to finish it for homework. The only problem is that I can not get back to edit my response, so I am just going to create a new one and copy what I have into this one. Ignore the other Matthew Hruska one. So cool.
