As a serial planner, my personality was not built for a pandemic. I was and have become completely unbalanced. I was in the middle of my MSc project when the very first lockdown started. The pandemic showed me how vulnerable our societal structure is. The positive is that my passion and appreciation for science has exponentially increased and I am just grateful for every day.

Hello everyone. I am Rahmotallah (or simply Rahmah) from Lagos, Nigeria.

COVID-19 has affected different aspects of our lives. Apart from its impact on our health sector, it has affected our economy, our social life and most notably our education system. Nose mask has become the new normal that we do not get to recognize those we have not met for a long time while they are on the mask. Vaccination is ongoing in different parts of the country. We rarely have severe cases of the disease here. Most people recover from the infection after isolating (self-isolation or hospitalization) and being on medications.

I finished from pharmacy school since 2019 but could not be inducted into the profession until late 2020 because of the pandemic. I had a personal experience because I tested positive during my internship in the hospital early 2021. I had bitter taste, nasal congestion and fever. The symptoms were like those of malaria. My consultant insisted I took the test and it turned out positive. I self-isolated, took medications that were given to me, consumed a lot of fluids and fruits, rested a lot and also did steam inhalation. I tested negative two weeks after. It was more of the psychological effect for me than any other thing. I am completely fine now and I have been vaccinated as well, awaiting my second dose in about two weeks time.

A national curfew and part lockdown are still in effect. Immunisation rates are still low but public uptake has appreciably improved.

COVID Pandemic has been a mixture of experiences for me. On one hand, I used the two lockdown (travel restrictions) imposed in Uganda to catch up on my PhD proposal and other aspects of personal life. In a bid to 'remain sane', I also ended up writing a book about the subconcious mind (Publishing soon!).
However, besides losing someone I know to COVID, timelines at work suffered and my children lost valuable school time. Adapting to the new learning schedule for children has not been easy because it needs continuous supervision which is not easy with the work schedule.
Also, I have been robbed of travel opportunities, one of my great hobbies.

Between May and June, COVID-19 cases spiked in the country due to the Delta variant. The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the National Public Health Institute of Liberia mounted a robust response and currently, our cases are under control. Preventive public health measures are in place to prevent the spread of the infection. As an individual, the outbreak generally affects my day-to-day activities, especially my social life. As a medical personnel, it made to be more vigilant and practice IPC measures more consistently.
