A. What is the problem and what are the root causes of the problem

ISIS is an abbreviation for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. They were founded in 1999 and have been a recurring problem for quite a long time. You constantly hear about them in the news regarding their terrorist attacks and genocides. One particular genocide is that of the Yazidi and the Christian religions. ISIS is slaughtering and sexually abusing these people because they don't agree with their religion. The Christian and Yazidi religions share many beliefs that ISIS does not believe in, consequently making them a target. In Iraq, Syria, and quite a few other middle eastern countries, ISIS is committing mass genocide to “clean” the countries of other religions. To prevent further genocides, we need to eliminate the root causes of the current genocides.

B. How has the problem affected the community directly

The communities involved with ISIS massacres have suffered greatly, as one could expect with any mass murder. ISIS raids villages, usually killing the men and keeping the women alive so they can enslave, rape, and eventually kill them. ISIS would often give a choice to people before they were killed. They would offer to convert the person to Islamic, but if they refuse, they would be executed in front of their remaining family before they were shipped away. As a result of this, over 2,745 children have been orphaned, and this number rises constantly. Up to 300,000 Yazidis are in refugee camps. This figure will continue to grow as ISIS destroys more and more communities.

C. Why should the rest of the world be concerned about this issue

ISIS is not to be ignored. The group’s heartless slaughter is concerning not only for those in the Middle East, but could become an issue for those in the U.S. too. ISIS is targeting Yazidis and Christians, but they could start targeting other religions. If they were to start genocides in the United States, the effect could be detrimental. With so many diverse religions in the United States, ISIS won't hesitate to target them too. If we don't stop ISIS, they will continue their genocides and terrorist attacks until we intervene. Iraq, Syria, Iran, and some other countries are just the start. ISIS will continue their quest to eliminate their opposing religions until we attempt to help.

D. What is currently being done to address this problem

A very small group of organizations have started to help. These include a few United States presidents that decided change was needed. While Obama was in office, there was a huge push to stop ISIS. Obama called in airstrikes and sent troops to help prevent ISIS attacks. Trump is also sending support in the form of troops. Nadia Murad was a survivor that has now set up an initiative to help other survivors, such as setting up refugee camps. Currently, she is trying to build a hospital using the money given to her after she received a Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to save other Yazidis. You could help these poor people by donating to Nadia's Initiative.
(https://nadiasinitiative.org/) In the United States, we are fortunate enough to not have to deal with ISIS and mass genocides. The very least we could do is to donate to help those that are suffering. The problem is being addressed, but is still not getting the support needed to put an end to these genocides once and for all.

I heard shouts outside my home. Screams of fear and agony. Then there were the guns. I had heard about ISIS in the news, but the stories of their massacre had not prepared me for what I saw. I dashed out the front door and saw my life being ripped apart. My community being destroyed in front of my eyes. I ran, trying to keep the thoughts out of my mind. It was horrid. I hid, watching the situation unfold from a distance. I watched as men dressed in black with balaclavas stood with machine guns over my people. I watched as my friends and family were shot and others were kidnapped. I didn't want to, but I still watched. They spared those who agreed to stay with them, but cold heartedly killed the others. After hours of waiting, they left. The men in black taking hostages with them. I could only imagine what would happen. I cautiously crept back into my village and met a few other survivors. Our entire world had just been turned upside down.
