Five steps away from me by

Even though I’ve been alive for a relatively small amount of time, there have been things, people, events, that changed the trajectory of my life. - I decided to start this virtual journey by reminiscing about my hometown, Fasano. I feel quite nostalgic about this city, since now I come back just for the holidays. Half of my relatives live there, and because I’ve grown up there, I have numerous emotional memories attached to my grandparents’ house, the beach, my old school. - Another significant step for me was reading the book “Matilda”, as from then on I discovered what an immersive experience is reading. I still love being carried to a whole different world and unwinding from my everyday life. - I read somewhere the quote “To be loved is to be changed” and I couldn’t agree more. Right now, I feel really loved by a lot of people, and I can see how they have made me a completely different person. My friends, my boyfriend and my sisters have all had a fundamental role in making me feel appreciated, and thanks to them I have overcome a lot of insecurities of mine, discovering who I really am. - There’s still things I’m uncertain and insecure about, nonetheless. One of these is my future: I really have no clue what I would like to do or where I would want to live, which is quite surprising, since I’ve always been certain about wanting to leave Rionero, as I felt there was nothing tying me to it. In the last couple of years something has changed though, and now I can’t imagine separating from all the people I love. I am still confident I will figure this matter out and find my true ambition, but in the meantime music has quite helped me, and more specifically the song “Tis the damn season” by Taylor Swift. - This whole introspective journey was very interesting: I think these 5 steps are quite telling about me as a person, and every single one of them has irremediably affected me.

I was raised in my mother's hometown, Fasano, and I spent there the first 5 years of my life. My grandparents' house holds a really special place in my heart, since my earliest and happiest memories happened there. This is a picture of me and my sister in our childhood room.

Choosing "Liceo Classico" was one of the most impactful decisions of my life and it really shaped who I am as a person. I had the chance to know my best friends and to discover subjects that I'm very passionate about, such as greek and latin. Even though my life could have been a bit easier if I attended another school, I love what I study and I'm grateful for meeting such wonderful people.

I am still unsure about what I would like to be in the future and I am really afraid of making the wrong choice. A couple of years ago, I was convinced I wanted to escape the small town I live in, but now I don't think I'm ready to leave behind all my loved ones. The song "Tis the damn season" by Taylor Swift perfectly captures how I feel. It describes the regret the narrator feels whenever she comes back to her hometown for the holidays. She can't help but wonder what could've been if she stayed, and more specifically, if she remained with her highschool sweetheart. Since I am in a similar situation, I feel understood and not alone. Even though I don't know what job I will do,or where I will live, I wish to be able to navigate this internal conflict and eventually choose what will make me the happiest.

"Matilda" by Roald Dahl is the first book I have ever read on my own, at the ripe old age of 6 years old. It really left a mark on me, as I was fascinated by the protagonist who was so smart and capable of dealing with absurd, yet quite sad, situations. I was spellbound by this story and this moment marked the beginning of my passion for books.

Sometimes the people you meet can shape who you are and change you, either for the worse or for the better. A person who has helped me figure out who I am is my boyfriend, Michele. We have been together for over a year and I consider him my biggest support. Since I am quite anxious, he know what to say to comfort me, and whenever I am spending time with him I feel at ease, almost lighter. Thanks to him, I'm becoming more balanced.
