Satan's "Invisible World"

Satan's Invisible World was how Puritans explained everything bad that occurs in the world. Every bad event, every misdeed, and every illness were all explained through Satan's world. They believed that the devil himself operated in the real world, but we couldn't see him. This is how they thought he recruited people to become witches and warlocks to work under him. I'm curious to see if this will have any influence on The Crucible.

Puritanism was a religious reform the started in Europe, but soon moved to the New World in 1620 due to persecution. Puritans wanted to rid the church of its corruption, which they believed came from the Catholics. Once they moved to the New World, they established the Massachusetts Bay colony where their beliefs were free to be expressed. Eventually, their beliefs led to the witch hunts due to witch hysteria.

Witch Trials for a Jury of Six

During the witch hunts, the witch trials were extremely unfair for the accused. Any sort of evidence, including non-physical, spectral evidence, was seen as sufficient enough to deem the accused guilty. The jury for the trials consisted of six girls who claimed to be bewitched by the people they accused. They were the front runners of accusers during the witch hunts, and they either were or acted to be possessed at the witch trials. In the end, two hundred people were jailed during the witch trials, and twenty-four people died.

Causes of Witch Hysteria

There were multiple causes of witch hysteria in Salem. One big cause was Satan's invisible world (as discussed earlier) since they believed that he recruited the witches. Another cause was that those afflicted with witchcraft exhibited symptoms that they were a witch. Foreign influences, like Tituba's voodoo and stories, also spread hysteria throughout Salem. One milder cause was because many teens were bored, so they listened to the stories of witchcraft and try some dark magic... kind of.

How It Started

Talk of witchcraft began after the daughter of Salem's minister Betty Parris became ill out of the blue. Others started to feel the same as Parris, so doctors began to investigate. However, they found no physical causes of the illnesses, so they thought it to be spiritual. Soon, talk of witchcraft spread, and people were being accused, starting with Tituba (as shown in the photo). She admitted to witchcraft and called out eight others of being witches. Thus, the Salem witch hunts began.
