His actions during this period are a matter of contention for many as historians try to understand his leadership qualities while remembering his flaws. In terms of his leadership attributes, the general’s most notable quality was his compromising attitude which is a quality that every leader must possess. As mentioned in the lectures for Week 6, the allies needed “immediate manpower” (Curriculum Development Department, 2018), and thus they demanded that the American forces be integrated with the British and the French Forces. 

While it is true that Pershing rejected this offer, it is also true that he allowed the black troops to be integrated with the French army. This act ensured that the Americans were able to preserve their sovereignty while helping their allies at the same time. This act also highlights another attribute of the general which includes "rigid attention, upright bearing, attention to detail, uncomplaining obedience to instructions…” (Gabel et al., 2012). However, these very attributes can also be considered the general’s flaws as his love for discipline ensured that he was feared rather than loved by his subordinates.
In terms of his accomplishments, he commanded the AEF (American Expeditionary Forced) during World War I and led them to victory in the war. He also happens to be the only American who was promoted to the rank of General of Armies in his own life which was the highest rank in the United States Army at that time. However, he was not without his failures as he relied on frontal assaults that were costly, both in terms of finances and the cost of lives as they caused high casualties (Hasian et al., 2019). Nonetheless, it is important to study a leader such as Pershing so that one can learn from their successes and avoid the mistakes that they had made in the past.
