I would like to learn how to cook with a how-to video. I am a visual learner, which is why it is easier for me to understand new concepts by being modeled how it should be done. I would first like the video to give me an overview of the ingredients needed, as well as the measurements. Then, I would like them to demonstrate step by step how it should be done, a voiceover would be very helpful. Another thing I would like the receipt video to have is access to pause and rewind the video. There are times when I need things to be repeated. This helps me catch on to the things I missed. Lastly, the video should show me what it should look like clip. I like to know if I did things correctly.

I would like to learn how to change a tire by having someone show me in a hands-on step-by-step "lesson". I can imagine this being similar to an "I do, we do, you do" lesson... I think by seeing it done, then going through the steps with someone, then doing the task myself I would be able to confidently say that I now know how to change a tire. If I needed a follow up or refresh of this skill, I would want to watch a video of someone teaching it because I would already be familiar with the steps but seeing the steps in the right order would make me feel confident that I was changing the tire correctly. -Andrea Barnett

The reason for that is because I can always go back (rewind) if I need to double check or if I missed a step in this new recipe. I would appreciate seeing all the ingredients first.
I started learning Italian again during Covid using Duolingo. I had taken an introductory Italian course at Fresno State in my last year of school back in 2006. It felt like a long time ago, so I needed to refresh my skills. Practicing daily on the app helped me remember vocabulary and improve my pronunciation.

To learn a new recipe, I first like to see someone do it once. This help me process the information without getting distracted, also help me figure out if I have any question or have to do more research on a certain ingredient. After seeing them once I would like to write the receipt to know what ingredients I need, This help me see if I have everything to cook it or do I need to go to the store. After the second time watching I would like to do it myself to see if it actually works out for me or if I can add extra things to the recipe for it can be at my taste. If I do not do it myself it is hard for me to remember recipe by just watching someone do it. This is why i really enjoy TIk Tok videos to show me how to cook. I also enjoy them because they are quick and to the point.

I would like to learn how to speak Spanish within a variety of contexts. I have had the intent to learn for a few years now, but have recently become more inclined to push myself to really learn. My steps to learning include, watching videos on how to say phrases and words, or inquiring new words and phrases from others. Next, I would put that into practice. I noticed that having conversations in Spanish, using the phrases and words I practiced separately is most effective for me. The hardest part about learning for me, has been finding the confidence to make conversation with others. I would like to learn by speaking with strangers to get over that self-conscious aspect. - Claire Machado

I am a visual learner, so I prefer watching people do a task rather than just reading a step-by-step cookbook. While watching them cook I would take note of the quantity they are putting in, how long they are cooking certain things for, and the ingredients. This way I have notes to refer back to that are written in a way that I would best understand. I would then have to practice doing the recipe by myself a few times while referring back to my notes and then slowly I wouldn't need the notes I took because I would've learned the process in my head.

The way I would like to learn a new language, like Spanish, is through the use of Duolingo and prior background knowledge. I’ve been relearning Spanish for a little over a year using this app just by doing at least 5 minutes of it a day. The way the lessons are structured makes it pretty simple to understand, but there are still times where I struggle with retention. Additionally, I was also told I could practice by listening to more Spanish songs and watching shows dubbed in Spanish with English subtitles. I haven’t tried these methods yet, but I do listen to a decent amount of Spanish music with some understanding of what the songs are about and it’s been pretty helpful to know I can translate that information. I’m learning Spanish mostly to help me communicate with my partner’s family because most of her older relatives only communicate through Spanish, and I don’t always want to rely on her as the translator. On top of that, Spanish is one of the most popular languages used in the states, so it’d definitely be a useful skill to have when looking for professional jobs, especially in education. - Wilfred Salacup

After learning the recipe a couple of times, I would like to experiment with new seasonings and adding new ingredients to my liking.

To learn how to cook, I find that watching instructional videos is an incredibly effective method for me. As a visual learner, I often rely on seeing the techniques in action to fully grasp the nuances of each recipe. When I embark on trying a new dish, my first step is to locate a reliable cooking video that outlines the process clearly.

Once I have the video ready, I make sure to watch it closely, paying attention to every detail, from the ingredients to the cooking methods. This visual approach allows me to understand the sequence of steps involved. As I begin cooking, I keep the video playing in the background. Listening to the instructions in real-time helps me stay on track and ensures that I don’t overlook any important steps.

This combination of watching and listening not only reinforces my learning but also enhances my cooking experience, making it more enjoyable and effective. By engaging with the content in this way, I feel more confident and capable in the kitchen, ready to tackle new recipes with enthusiasm

I want to learn how to cook a new recipe via a video with great detail. I am learning to bake, which was one of my goals for this year. One source I found that is helpful is TikTok. There are a lot of amazing cooks and chefs that show you step by step. I like the visual learning aspect I can't measure things based on whim or just guessing. I think watching videos helps those who need a visual to know how to cook. Another way I learned is to find recipes online with pictures and measurements. This allows me to see what the products should look like as I'm mixing and baking. I find downloading them as a PDF helps since I can always have the recipe ready. I like to think cooking is like trial and error and it is okay to make mistakes.

One way I like to learn to cook a new recipe is by visuals. Whether it is shown in a video or by someone. I've actually been getting into more cooking and my mom has been a huge help. She teaches me step by step and sometimes even repeats the step for me to understand. I also refer back to tiktok as they often have quick tutorials on different recipes. I think it is a mixture of visual and hands on learning for me on how I would like to cook a new recipe.

I would love to cook a new recipe from a traditional Native American-inspired recipe, focusing on natural, seasonal ingredients like buffalo meat especially knowing that the buffalo is considered a sacred animal. Since I love cooking with fruits, seeds, and vegetables, I would use what is considered the Three sisters which are corn, beans, and squash. Wild fruits, seeds, and herbs such as sage and wild mint must be included as well. Use traditional cooking methods like open-fire grilling, clay pot simmering, or pit roasting to enhance natural flavors exactly as my traditional Mexican cooking. I will start by blessing the ingredients, then brown the buffalo meat, add vegetables, season with natural herbs, and simmer slowly. Serve family-style in natural dishware, fostering a sense of community and gratitude. This mindful approach honors the land, the food, and cultural traditions. Just thinking about cooking a traditional Native American recipe brings lots of joy in my heart.

To learn how to play a new video game, I would first watch YouTube videos talking about the video game I was interested in to see if it is a type of game I would like to play and know how to play. These videos would go over not only the story of the game and the characters but also the game's mechanics and whether they were easy to pick or challenging for beginners. After that, depending on if the game was challenging, I would watch videos explaining how the game would work and recommend tips for the game. Once I'm done watching all the videos, I would then play the game using all the tips and tricks I've learned and will also develop hands-on experience from actually playing the game.

If I were to learn how to cook a new recipe, I would appreciate it if it was broken down in an organized manner. Firstly, I would want the ingredient list to include the exact measurements/proportions. Each cooking step should be clearly written with accompanying photos or preferably a video. For instance, if the recipe calls for chopping vegetables, a photo showing the desired size and technique would be helpful. Recipes that include specific time indicators and visual cues are especially helpful for me because then I don't have to stress about checking on the food every minute and waiting until it's ready.

I need exact measurements as well. I am not able to just toss ingredients in, to me it feels wrong and I need an exact amount of an ingredient to add into my recipe. For example, I do not accept " just add a few tomatoes'' , I need to know exactly how many tomatoes I must add into my recipe. After watching the video or being taught by someone on how to cook the recipe , I would write it down and refer back to just in case I may need it.

I will make sure to change any minutes of cook time if needed. I would also time myself to see how long it really takes to make the recipe. This is how I would learn to cook a new recipe. I would listen to this language on the radio which means music and talk shows. The music would help me learn the language because it is catchy, then I could later look up what the words stuck in my head mean. The talk shows would help me expand my vocabulary. Then I would watch movies in this language with the subtitles in English or in that language. This would help me see the words that I am hearing because sometimes when I am hearing the words in the other language, it is hard to make out single words or words that have silent letters. I would start to express myself and write in this language, this would help with my reading as well, and it will help me start to produce thought in this language. I would try to talk with someone who speaks this language, and who is trying to learn English. We would swap knowledge and benefit each other a lot. I would read books in this language and annotate words I want to look up later, and use context clues with the words I do know. I would also compare this language to English in grammar, syntax, spelling, alphabetic letters, sounds, and more.

To make it more meaningful, I would like to travel to a country like France to practice my language skills this would really encourage me to learn the language.

The ideal way I would like to learn to speak a new language is to immersed in a place where the language is spoken, and only that language. For instance, I know some Spanish (very little) because I worked as an 18-24 year old in restaurants where most of the kitchen staff spoke Spanish. I feel that if I were able to live in a Spanish-speaking country for at least 6 months, where Spanish was the only verbal interaction I had, then I would start to learn it. Because I only practiced Spanish at work, I didn't hold onto enough. As I've aged and worked with less Spanish-speakers, I've lost more and more of my knowledge. A foreign language is something I need to be fully immersed in, practicing daily.

As a visual learner, I would appreciate watching a video or following a step-by-step guide with pictures that clearly show each part of the process. Seeing the procedure in action would help me understand the steps more easily. However, I also think it's important to practice the task in real life. Actually getting the chance to change a tire myself, with guidance from someone experienced, would help reinforce what I saw in the video. If I could change my learning approach, I would incorporate more hands-on practice and perhaps ask questions during the process to ensure I understand each step. -Jennifer Garduno

I would like to learn how to speak a new language by interacting with others who also speak the language, by spending time in the country where the language is spoken, and through back and forth dialogue whether in person or online. I took French all 4 years in highschool and 2 semesters in college. It's been years since I took my last class, and I still try to keep parts of what I learned by using Duolingo. However, I don't find it to be as effective as I would like to. Even though it keeps me accountable to practice at least 5 minutes a day, I feel like my French is not worthy of a meaningful conversation that extends to more day to day dialogue. I can get by talking about interests, feelings, shopping, family, etc. I would like to speak it fluently so I can converse over social issues and day to day life. I have a textbook I kept with practice worksheets, and I found that it is not my ideal way to learn. If I had the opportunity to go to Canada, or Europe where I can practice French, I do believe that it would be most effective. I would also like to interact with people who speak the language, which is hard to do here in the Central Valley. For me, experience and direct exposure would be the most ideal way to learn and retain a languag.

I have a lot of respect for families and students who come to a new country and immerse themselves in the country and learn the language as they go. I envy those who can speak more than one language fluently. WHEN I learn a new language, I want to learn with someone who has a lot patience with me. I also am a very visual learner. I would like to start learning vocabulary with pictures with the new language word associated with that picture. I also want to learn from authentic learning activities where I am actively participating rather than just writing answers on a worksheet. I think I would learn more from a field trip where I go to the market and learn how speak the language while purchasing items at the store.

During my first year of college, I decided to learn American Sign Language (ASL) instead of taking another Spanish class, since I am already bilingual in Spanish and English. The class was taught by a deaf professor, which made sense because a deaf person would be the best instructor for the language. However, I struggled a lot and didn’t learn as much as I had hoped.

The class included discussions among students, but since some already knew ASL while others, like me, were complete beginners, it was difficult to keep up. The professor seemed to focus more on students who already had experience with ASL, which made it even harder for me. Additionally, the class only met twice a week, which was not enough for me to grasp the language effectively.

I did have a textbook with a video component, but at the time, I thought the video had no sound. I later discovered, years later, that it actually did, which was frustrating because it could have helped me learn better. Looking back, I think I would have learned ASL more quickly if the class had met more frequently, provided additional practice through videos, and had a more supportive professor.- Brianna Ballesteros

If I need to go back to what I did then this learning style would be helpful because I could look at the previous steps. Learning this way also helps me remember the steps because the information came across my eyes and stayed in my head. However, if I was watching a video I would forget the time, ingredients or steps because I processed the information through hearing.

I tried learning Japanese independently with Duolingo but could not stick to a practice schedule. I would then feel intense feelings of guilt because It was something I really wanted to learn but I couldn't get myself to do it. I signed up for a Japanese language class at Fresno State. I was able to learn how to speak and read basic Japanese with the help of my professor and classmates. We started off with learning the basic sounds and katakana and then went into our textbook and with assigned assignments I would learn the words in the texts that we had to read. We would practice speaking in class and everyone was on the same level so I didn't feel embarrassed. I seem to only be able to learn when there is a deadline that can affect me and when there are people I feel safe with to converse about what we are learning.

I also tend to snack as I cook, which definitely doesn’t help my focus. When trying a new recipe, I prefer to get the exact ingredients listed. I’d search for one that shows step-by-step instructions with clear visuals so I can see exactly what needs to be done. I’d pay attention to details and make sure I note what exactly I need to do. Then, I’d ask someone who knows how to change a tire, like a friend or family member, to physically show me how to do it. While they’re demonstrating, I’d ask questions if I don’t understand something.

Then, I’d try changing the tire on my own, step by step, but with the person there to check and give tips if I’m doing something wrong. Afterward, I’d practice a couple more times by myself, using the video as a reference and remembering the advice I got from the person who showed me. That way, I can get more comfortable changing a tire. - Melissa Rios

If I had to learn how to change a tire I would say that the most effective method would be to teach me step by step and allow me to attempt it with that person. Reading directions would obviously work as well however it would take me double the time it would if I were to simply watch someone do it. If possible, having someone there to correct me along the way would also be very helpful. Learning why the correction was made would make my learning process more efficient as well. It is important for me to understand why something is wrong and not simply be corrected because I need to know why something would not work or why it isn’t correct.

One way that I would learn how to cook a new recipe would be by first watching someone cook the dish. I would then try to replicate what they did on my own and have them help me when it is needed. For example, my mom has been showing me how to prepare traditional dishes and through watching her cook and then having her help me it has allowed me to learn a variety of different recipes. Another way that I would learn how to cook would be through tik tok videos which have also showed me how to cook and learn about different cultural dishes.

Repetition is how I was able to pick up a bit of ASL when I took the course during the summer. I also began using Duolingo which is based on a majority of audio support when learning French.

I would like to learn to speak a new language perhaps Punjabi, even if it’s small words. In the neighborhood where I live there’s a pretty big population of people who speak Punjabi including my neighbors. I remember one time my neighbor needed help translating something to his gardener, his gardener spoke Spanish but unfortunately neither did the gardener and I knew what he was trying to tell us. I’ve also subbed at the school in my neighborhood and some students need help understanding English sometimes so maybe learning a little of their native language can better students understanding, including those parents who also don’t speak English. If I would’ve known learn a new language I wouldn’t need in person help & a lot of practice, just because I do tend to forget a lot of things and words, so for memorization I’d have to be consistent and on top of everything.

I do NOT enjoy reading off of a computer. As it relates to learning how to cook a new recipe, I would like to have a hard copy of the recipe in my hand, but now utilize a computer to watch step by step how the to cook/bake the item. I think for me, I am visual learner. When learning a new task, I need to see how it is done first and I like to have the physical copy of the text in my hand as well. This kind of reminds me of my student teaching, I have my lesson plan in my hands and I have already watched my MT teach a similar lesson as well.

I would like to learn how to change a tire on my own. I say this because I am usually the type of person to try things by myself first, then - if I am not able to figure it out - I ask for help. I guess you can say it is being stubborn, but I don't think there is anything wrong with trying something new by yourself to gain experience. I think of it as a pre-assessment almost; first I assess what I do know, then I adjust and see where I went wrong so I can get it right for next time. As for changing the tire, I think I would prefer if someone were to tell me how to do each step instead of me watching someone. I would of course like a visual demonstration, but I prefer a hands-on learning experience if given the option.

Learning a new language can be challenging, but I would love to learn ASL (American Sign Language). ASL is a visual and expressive language that allows communication through gestures, facial expressions, and hand movements. I think learning ASL would not only help me connect with the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community but also improve my ability to express myself in different ways. Since I am a visual and hands-on learner, I believe practicing ASL through videos, interactive activities, and real-life conversations would be the most effective way for me to learn. Additionally, using ASL in everyday situations, such as teaching or working with students, would reinforce my learning and help me become more fluent over time. -Julia Matteucci

I took two ASL classes at Reedley College, but since I didn’t have anyone to practice with and lacked time, I forgot most of the signs and sentence structures I had learned. To better support my learning this time, I would apply UDL strategies by engaging with the Deaf community and attending events where I can sign regularly with others. I learn best through hands-on and visual experiences, so watching ASL videos and using interactive tools would help me relearn and retain the language. I would also set small goals and use progress-tracking apps to stay motivated and consistent.
