Relationships with family members that were once hard to contact can now be re-birthed and encouraged with the use of social media like Facebook or imessaging with the iPhone. Our definition of family has become wider in the sense that even further extended family members can be as close to us as our immediate kin.

For example, I am very close with my cousin, who lives in Texas. Although we rarely see each other, with applications like Skype, I am still able to have face-face contact and catch up with her often. Social media has ensured that I have a route to contact her; and when Hurricane Harvey hit, I still had a way to make sure she was safe.

Compared to back then, when family dinners may have been full of conversation, family dinners are now individual family members on their own device. Family activities now may include watching movies, or families may not do any activities together anymore.

For example, a family may not spend much time together because they're too busy with their technology for either work, school or other reasons. Technology is such an important part of our lives that it may be hard to seperate our family lives with our technology.

Communication and family norms have changed greatly because of technology, therefore changing the definition of family.

We don't communicate much as person, and we often use technology to fill the awkward conversations or if we don't want to be verbal.
'Psychology Today' states that it created a family divide because times have changed and technology offers children independence in terms of parents interfering with their social lives. There is an evident line for freedom, once it comes in terms with family relations.

Firstly, the internet has permanently blurred the boundaries between work and home, thus many parents are still working in one form or another when they are with their family at home. Moreover, many parents think technology makes their parenting life easier through using technological devices to keep children occupied when they are busy working. The kid will interpret this as meaning that they should use technology to disconnect from family activities when its happening around them. Thirdly, the time spent on the computer and watching TV is about 8 hours a day. Previously, this time was usually spent alone and not with the rest of the family. Now parents instead of playing with their kids, instead they are constantly busy on their phone socializing through social media. Therefore the definition of family has completely changed over the years, now definition of family is manipulated by technology as it expands, and it is more reasonable to define family as a group of people who live together, and sometimes eats together, and do not have much contact with each other and people to talk to each other only when is necessary. Although technology is now a fundamental part of our lives, in order for kids to grow into adults who will value family and the strong bonds it will create, parents today must take the time to give their kids attention and restrict them from using technology during certain periods of time. In this new generation, kids do not enjoy or value family life like in the old days, but parents can change that through off-lining their social media and teach their kids the great quality of family time. For instance in my own personal life, when Facebook became popular in 2009, my family had to have a family discussion talking about how important it is to no use your technology when eating dinner and sometimes we have to put our phones down. As a result, I was grown up constantly taught to value family time.

Although this article only talks about parent-children relationship, it has good points on how they are affected, and what the factors are. Children are usually more adaptable to new things, including technology. So it is natural that they are always ahead of their parents, and the problem is that without parents knowing how to use a technology that their children are using, they cannot communicate with them even if they want to, resulting an isolation of parents from the children, and for children who already gained independence through technology, such as computer and mobile devices, they are not as dependent to their parents as they used to be in the past. Therefore, there is no reason for children to communicate with parents, because it is boring since they don't know how to use technology and they are not even dependent to their parents psychologically, because they can easily contact to their friends and talk to them instead. For example, if a child is listening to music with their headphones in, they are less likely to engage in a proper conversation with their parents(acts as a barrier). Technology has also changed the traditional "roles" parents play in parenting. Parents may believe that technology will help make parenting easier-use technology as a way to keep children busy, but this however takes away opportunities for the parent to spend time with their child and actually 'parent' them. However, technology creates a way for families to connect. Many people have family members who may not live near or even in the same country as them. Parents however aren't any better, technology has also impacted the older generations significantly. Parents also engage in checking their cellphone constantly, communicating with long distance family members, sending emails, and etc. Thus making it evident how the definition of family has changed over the years negatively, whereas individuals are more willing to engage in their technology then communicating with their actual family members.
