Cherry's Motivation

Cherry Valance is a strongly motivated character. Her main motivation is to stop fighting between socs and greasers. She was Bob’s girlfriend who was killed by a greaser. It drove her even more when Bob was killed. She did everything in her power to make the rumble clean so nobody got hurt. She even sided with the greasers-despite her being a soc- just to try to stop it. The last example is there is when Pony, Johnny, and Two-bit were in the car, driving Cherry back to her house. “Then [Bob] reached in his back pocket and flipped out his switchblade. ‘Try it, pal.’ ‘No!’ Cherry cried. ‘Stop it!’ She looked at Bob. ‘We'll ride home with you. Just wait a minute.’ ‘Why?" Two-Bit demanded. ‘We ain't scared of them.’ Cherry shuddered. ‘I can't stand fights... I can't stand them…’"(39-40). This is an example of Cherry’s motivation to stop the fighting.

Cherry's Strengths

Cherry’s best strength is her ability to relate others. She often can tell people’s moods which helps her put them at ease. One example is when Ponyboy is talking to Cherry about their lives. “‘You read a lot, don't you, Ponyboy?’ Cherry asked. I [Ponyboy] was startled. ‘Yeah. Why?’ She kind of shrugged. ‘I could just tell. I'll bet you watch sunsets, too’” (35). At that point Cherry put Pony at ease by being able to tell his mood. Another example is when she was able to calm Johnny and Pony down at the theatre when they were arguing. Another spot when Cherry related to someone is when Cherry is spying for them and agrees that the sunset is beautiful from both sides of the battle.

Flaws

Cherry has a couple flaws. One major one is that she is a soc. That means she is expected to do certain things that she doesn’t want to do. One example is when she is walking with Marcia, Pony, and Johnny and they are stopped by Bob and a blue mustang, just because she’s not supposed to be talking or having any positive interaction with greasers. It makes her have to do things that doesn’t let her be herself. That causes internal conflict, or human vs self, between her loyalties and her own self. Another example is when she can’t talk to Pony at school because he is a greaser and she is soc. “‘I know,’ she said quietly, ‘but we'd better go with them. Ponyboy... I mean... if I see you in the hall at school or someplace and don't say hi, well, it's not personal or anything’” (40). This explains that she can’t talk to Pony rather than she doesn’t want to.

Cherry's Type of Character

Cherry is a protagonist, static, and more flat than round. She is a protagonist because she helps the greasers, never doing anything to wrong or hurt anyone on purpose to try to prevent fighting. Dally proves this by saying “‘Hey, I didn't tell you we got us a spy.’ ‘A spy?’ Johnny looked up from his banana split. ‘Who?’ 'That good-lookin' broad I tried to pick up that night you killed the Soc. The redhead, Cherry what's-her-name’”(72). Also, she has conflict and is not necessarily against other protagonists. She is fairly static because she doesn’t change her mindset that much. In the beginning, she hates the fighting between the greasers and the socs because she doesn’t like when people get injured. Later, when Bob dies, she still doesn’t change her mindset, she just hates fighting more. She is fairly flat because even though she is a main character, she doesn’t play a huge role in the story. Also, she doesn’t appear in the story again until she becomes a spy. The author didn’t put much text in that involves her.

Cherry is a moderate extravert and this is because she reasonably empathetic and outgoing. One example is at the movie she makes friends with Pony and Johnny very fast. “The redhead just smiled. ‘That's an original and lovely name.’ ‘My dad was an original person,’ I said. ‘I've got a brother named Sodapop, and it says so on his birth certificate.’ ‘My name is Sherri, but I'm called Cherry because of my hair. Cherry Valance.’” She is also a protagonist which is obvious because she is a main character, has conflict and isn’t against Ponyboy of the other protagonists. An example is when she spies for the greasers who are the other main characters so that they’re better off.
