Subsistence farming or smallholder agriculture is when one family grows only enough to feed themselves. There is not usually much harvest to sell or trade, and what surplus there is tends to be stored to last the family until the next harvest. This is the most widely used method of agricultural farming in sub-Saharan Africa, and the majority of the rural poor depend on it for survival. It’s a method that has appeal to rural farmers because it allows food to be produced (with very little cost) in the rural areas, it lessens their need to find transportation to a city, and it creates opportunity to continue living in a village (where housing and land are much more affordable).

Pastoral Farming- keeping and grazing animals.
The aim of this form of agriculture is to produce livestock. Pastoral-ism is a successful strategy to support a population on less productive land, and adapts well to the environment. For example, in savannas , pastoralists and their animals gather when rain water is abundant and the pasture is rich, then scatter during the drying of the savanna. Pastoralists often use their herds to affect their environment. Grazing herds on savannas can ensure the biodiversity of the savannas and prevent them from evolving into scrub land*

*Scrub land: A land consisting of scrub vegetation..

Subsistence farming primarily focused on producing enough crops to feed the farmers own family and animals. They grow crops enough for the family and only sell produce at a local market incase there is a surplus. This method of farming is primarily for self-sufficiency. "Subsistence agriculture people" believe in producing for themselves except for things such as sugar, iron tools, clothing, etc. This type of farming is mostly adapted by rural poor families in sub-saharan african countries as it includes a simple lifestyle and doesmt include cost of transportation and stress.
