The images within the text showcase how it correlates with the words written on the text. Faizah and Asiya, two sisters, demonstrate the challenges young Muslim women might encounter in their day to day lives. The story shares the different perspectives of what others might say, think, or treat someone with a Hijab. The images playfully show genuine curiosity and acceptance among other children meanwhile, other children who may not be as kind. The illustrations indicate the students who are teasing Faizah to be blurred out but almost represented as a shadow.

Throughout the story, Yasmin is trying to become what she thinks a superhero is. In that way, she is trying to figure out her role in the world and who she is. Many subtle mentions of Yasmin's culture and family throughout the text are represented in the illustrations. For instance, Yasmin calls her dad, "Baba", which is the honorary term used for a father figure in the Indian culture. Other mentions to the Indian culture are present such as her Nana's dupatta and her Baba serving her lassi. These terms are used throughout without explanation in the text but are shown in the illustrations for context. If a student who was not familiar with these words read this text, they would be able to understand what they mean by looking at the illustrations. Hatem Aly did this as a way to expose people of different backgrounds to a part of the Indian culture.

Often in the visual text, emotions about the characters are revealed. Hatem Aly draws his characters with lots of expression on their face, even if that emotion is not described explicitly in the text. It shows more about what Yasmin is feeling deeper than the words on the page go into. Also, I love the diversity shown in this text. There are characters of many different races portrayed. That is not explicitly stated in the written text, instead just shown in the illustrations. In the story, the visual text shows modern cultural norms that are not mentioned in the written text. For example, Matilda has a babysitter in the story who has blue short hair, multiple piercings and is on her cell phone. This stands out because it is different than the look of a stereotypical babysitter. Hatem Aly, most likely drew the babysitter this way to get away from such stereotypes and to show how a new generation may dress and act and that she still makes Matilda happy and does a nice job taking care of her


Hatem's cartoon visuals do a fantastic job of complimenting the written text when looking at the emotions and attitudes of the characters. When the parents say no to certain foods, such as quiche, the details on their faces show that they are completely against it and are stern with their answer. Their eyebrows are lowered and their mouth's are opened with their teeth showing. The cartoons are exaggerated which helps with the composition of the visuals. There are focal points throughout the pages for reads to focus in on.
