In this Chapter Lisa wakes up from a dream of a bumblebee but when she wakes up she can still hear the buzzing noise. When she finally makes the connection that the buzzing noise isn't one of a bee but of the invasion of the Germans. Lisa goes down to accompany her parents. Just then Lisa's older brother wakes up, when he finds out about the attack he gets super upset over the fact that Denmark didn't even fight back. The next day they go to school everyone pretending like this is a normal day. Stefan walks with Lisa to school, still upset about the whole invasion. 2 minutes after Erik join's Lisa and Stefan and talks to Lisa about Gustav Wied acting like nothing different had happened at all. When Lisa asks Erik's opinion about the German attack, Erik doesn't have a huge opinion on it. Just the fact that everything will be about the same and if they obey the Germans all will be good. He also calls their cousin Isaac a communist. This angers Stefan and he ends up tripping Erik. After tripping Erik Stefan joins his friends leaving Erik and Lisa together. They end up arguing over the Germans and when they reach school Mrs. Jensen tells the students that they all have to cooperate before she bursts into tears. During school Susan and Lisa spend the day writing notes to each other about how they'll blow up all the Germans they can if they get the chance but what we have to learn is you make your own chances.

In this chapter Lisa can not fall asleep because whenever she closes her eyes she can only think of the German soldiers. She can hear her father telling her mother that he can't stand treating the German's and that he'll tell the German's that straight to their faces. In response Lisa's mother says that he would go to jail especially because he's Jewish. This makes Lisa terrified as she remembers the time when her family had invited the Erik's family, Uncle Poul's family, the Knudsen's and Stefan's friend Jesper. During that time Stefan had said that the Jews are now slaves and this time when they leave Denmark it wont be like the exodus. Adam, Erik's father had objected to this and claimed it a rumor. Saying that there was no proof and that in Denmark they still have their own government that's in control. After that it turned into a greater argument between the two. Now the conversations about how the Nazis hate Jewish people come back to her, making her extremely frightened. Once again Lisa's father tells Lisa's mother that it's painful to treat the Germans. While listening to this Lisa has an idea. She says to continue treating the Germans but just incorrectly. Lisa's father and mother think this is a great idea and agree to put the plan into action. Later when she's about to go to bed it dawns to her that this plan puts her father in terrible danger if the Germans find out.

In the beginning of this chapter Lisa is waiting for the day to be over so she can follow Stefan. She has a feeling something's up after hearing Stefan and Jesper fighting. They were fighting because Jesper wouldn't let Stefan do the more dangerous things in the resistance as he is Jewish and is therefore more in danger if they get caught. She remembers the time when she and Stefan would play chicken with the German soldiers. Some would move aside and some wouldn't. Once Stefan went too far and walked in between the soldiers. And he ended up getting hit. While remembering this it makes her want to do something to defend Denmark. This also leads her to remember how she found leaflets telling the actual news of Denmark and some leaflets that were just trolling the Germans. She realizes that someone must be printing these out and she suspects that her brother might have something to do with it. At last the bell rings and when she leaves the school she can see Stefan and Jesper walking. She follows them and they end up going to a playground, there she sees a man in a winter jacket leave a big package on a bench and then she sees her brother and Jesper taking the package and stuffing it under there jacket. Then she sees them walking away so she follows again, they go inside a streetcar and she before she can go on the streetcar pulls away. So she runs after it and ends up getting on but then finds out that Jesper and Stefan had already got of the streetcar. She looks at the ground and sees a small paper she puts it in her pocket and gets of the street car and goes home. When arriving home she looks at the piece of paper and finds out that they managed to blow up a tool factory and some rail lines. She waits for her brother to come home so that she can try to convince him to let her help.

At first Stefan says no saying its too dangerous but after some convincing he agrees. The next day Lisa and Erik go to school and see a barbed wire all around the school yard and she can see thin scrawny dirty men in prison uniforms looking at them through the wire. Erik try's to find out there language but he ends up not being able to. She gives them a sandwich and an apple before a guard sees them and yells at them to go away. When they arrive they find out that school will only be every other day from now on. When arriving at home she goes to her brother and gets told that she picks up the "laundry" and inside the laundry bag will be underground newspapers and she has to drop one off at each street car until the bags empty. She starts on Friday.

Chapter 5...

In this chapter she's on her way to Nansen's laundry. When she arrives she asks for Soren Sorenson's laundry and he goes inside and retrieves a bag for her. She gets on the first street car and just when she's about to drop one bundle she sees 2 German soldiers. She can see them looking at her suspiciously. She gets up about to leave when she throws up on the 2 soldiers. 20 people or so tell her to get off the street car as they block the soldiers. She gets on the next street car and manages to successfully leave a pile. She goes back to the laundromat and he pays her 10 ore. After supper Stefan motions her into his room and asks how it went. She tells him everything including the vomiting incident and he starts laughing. In the end they both end up laughing uncontrollably.

In this chapter it begins by showing that it has been 2 years since the Nazi invasion. Lisa still continues to drop papers on streetcars. Stefan won't let her go with him to the places he goes to no matter how much she asks. Today is Lisa's birthday and so for that reason she says that she is going to pretend that the war isn't happening like Erik does. She was going to go to the dance hall that Susanne's parents ran. For the dance she's going with Erik and she's wearing a new white dress with gloves too. When she's about to leave she hears her father crying. She hears her father saying that at the hospital there was a Nazi invasion and they killed everyone including the patient. He also says that Lene Karlsen,Tove Albrechts,Hanne Gudmundsen and Ingemor Nielsen got murdered. He says that the mother was giving birth to a child and they killed the mother as well. The father also got shot. He says how he managed to save the baby. Lisa's father asks Lisa's mother "what kind of world are we living in?" Just then Erik knocks on the door. And Lisa's mother sends off Lisa with Erik to the dance hall. When they go to the dance hall they see Jesper,Stefan and Susanne sitting at a table so they go and join them. Jesper asks Lisa to dance and she agrees. He asks her what's wrong and she tells him about everything while crying. He then tells her to enjoy her birthday and he manages to cheer her up a bit. At the end of the party she tells Erik and Stefan about what happened at the hospital. Erik says that it's horrible which angers Stefan because he thinks of it as phony sympathy. They both end up arguing and the fight ends with Erik saying that Stefan's temper is going to get him in trouble one day.

I may have made one of the worst decisions of my life. I think this war has made me so mad that I've put my own sister in danger. I am without doubt the worst brother. Tell me how to make this right.

I joined a resistance to fight back to the attacks of the Nazis. We drop pamphlets on street cars and on the streets so that the citizens of Denmark can know the true news and not the made up crap that the Germans come up with. My sister probably found one of these pamphlets and thought I had something to do with this. Anyway she asked if she could join the resistance and help. At first I said no but then I had realized that we need as much help as possible to fight the Germans. I had thought that even if I had been firm on no she probably would have found another way to help the resistance. But then later that night I couldn’t help thinking that If she got caught she would be shipped to a concentration camp or maybe even worse. And that would be entirely my fault for putting my sister in danger just so that Denmark had another member in the resistance. I act all tough around my entire family but only Jesper knows just how much I hate this war and would do anything for this war to stop even if it would cost my life. During the night I can barely sleep because of nightmares of my family being killed for no reason other than being Jewish. And now it's much worse knowing that these nightmares might as well come true if my sister gets caught.

I feel as though this is the absolute worst decision I've made in my life. Is there anyway there’s a positive aspect to this? Please give me some advice.

Sincerely,

Anxious Big Brother

In this chapter Lisa and Stefan enter their apartment but think they're in the wrong one as they hear the noise of a baby crying. When they look inside they see their father carrying a baby. Lisa's mother then comes to give the milk bottle to Lisa's father. Stefan then asks if the baby is the one of whose parents were shot. Lisa's father says yes then tells them that he couldn't locate any family of the baby so they are going to have to take care of the baby. Lisa then asks the sex of the baby and Lisa's father says that it's a girl and that the mother of the baby was so sure that it was a girl that she didn't even come up with a boy name. The last words that she said was asking if they could name the baby Sarah. Lisa starts to cry thinking of how the baby is now an orphan. Later on when Lisa's lying down thinking about her baby sister she hears an explosion. When they look outside they see that the explosion is near where Susanne lives. After a while everyone goes to bed except Lisa. Soon there's a knock on the door and when she opens the door she sees Susanne burnt and hurt with her clothes in tatters and her hair charred off. Lisa's father goes to the hospital

The Main Idea in this chapter would be that Susanne killed the 2 soldiers that followed them. This makes Lisa think if she could kill someone or if she would have to. The Nazis are really angry now and so there bringing out more troops and making more arrests. This though makes the resistance fight back harder. They hide Susanne's gun under a floorboard but there are already a few there already. Just then Erik knocks on the door. He finally admits that the Nazi attack is a big deal and that he will start to fight back.

Its not safe for the Jews as they've been rounded up and sent to concentration camps in many places. They think that Susanne shouldn't suffer when she's not Jewish and so can live a somewhat peaceful life. This makes Lisa think about how unfair it is that just because she is Jewish she's in danger. She feels that she is like everyone else but only she has to go through this.

Afterwards Lisa and Stefan say goodbye to Jesper and go into a trawler with other occupants inside. They help row the boat. Unfortunately the boat tips as an incoming boats pressure knocks the trawler down and they are thrown into the water. The other people in the trawler manage to grab on to a lifesaver. Lisa looking for Stefan finds him and he says he didn't have a chance of staying as the pill dissolved. They grab on to a lifesaver and are lifted up, they then see the captain of the ship and he says "Welcome to Sweden".

Did I like the book Lisa’s War??

The book Lisa’s War is in my opinion a really great book! I usually don’t enjoy war books and movies but I found this book really interesting. I might try giving war books another chance and maybe check out a war book at the library! I think that world war 2 was actually a really interesting war to learn about. It’s crazy to believe that World War 2 actually happened and maybe someone had an experience somewhat like Lisa’s.

My favorite chapter would either be chapter 6 or 7. Chapter 6 because I liked the fact that it had been 2 years since the Nazi’s invaded Denmark, I liked how this chapter introduced us to Sarah and the sad deaths of her parents. I also thought that for Lisa’s 14th birthday it was pretty cool that she got to go to a dance hall. I also liked chapter 7 because it was incredibly short but packed with so many events, some good and some bad. Good being Lisa’s family adopting Sarah and bad being the explosion at the dance hall leading to Susanne's parents death.

My favorite character in this book would be Susanne. I liked her character and I found that it was really brave of her to not stay crying inside the entire time when her parents died but to have the motivation to fight back and to not give up. I felt as though I could Identify with Susanne a bit. If I were in her shoes I would have definitely been at home crying and grieving if my parents died. I would have probably grieved longer than Susanne did, but after I got past the grieving stage, I would have also had the determination and motivation to fight back and bring justice to my parents death. I really wished that Susanne could have been in the book a bit longer, as in all the way to the end with Lisa.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone who likes to read about war, especially WW2. I would also recommend this book to people who, like me, are not a huge fan of war books so that they can give these sorts of books a shot! . Before reading Lisa’s War I read a book called “Linked” by Gordon Korman and I found the book really really interesting. Linked was also a bit based on world war 2 but unlike Lisa’s war it was in present time not in 1939 (the time of war). I would also definitely recommend “Linked” by Gordon Korman.

Lisa’s War, By: Carol Matas is a really good book to read if you want to learn a bit of history about WW2 without opening a textbook. I found that there were a few moments in this book where you didn’t expect something to happen, so I thought it was quite suspenseful at times. Lisa’s War was written from the point of view of a 14 year old girl which is a point of view you wouldn’t really think about when you think of someone's life through war. I think that itself definitely shows that Lisa’s War is not like a classic war book, therefore making it more interesting. I really enjoyed reading Lisa’s War and I think it might be in my top 3 favorite war books! ( I’ve only read 3 war books :D )

Quotation Explanation

Below you will find quotations from the novel Lisa’s War. For each quotation, you need to explain what the context is and why it is significant to the story. (20)

“I remember I was dreaming about a bee. A giant bumblebee. It was buzzing in my ear; it was going to sting me. I opened my eyes and sat up with a start, but the buzzing didn’t stop.” (p. 1)

When this quote happened she was dreaming about a bee when she woke up she still heard the buzzing noise of the bee. She thought that maybe it was one of those dreams where even though you open your eyes you can still see it (in this case hear it). It was not one of those dreams but the sound of Denmark being taken in the control of Germany. This quote is definitely significant to the story as it begins the whole book of Lisa trying to fight back to the Nazi’s control over Denmark.

“I leap off, dragging my bag, run into the grass and trees beside the stop, and finish throwing up. Then I sink down by my sack. I’m weak, I’m shaking. I think I’m crying, and my mouth tastes terrible. I want to go home. How did I get myself into this? I think back to the streetcar. All those people – they saved me. Maybe they saved my life.” (p. 29)

When this quote happened it was her first day of helping the resistance. Her job was to drop a newspaper at each street car that she went into. When she went into her first streetcar and was about to drop a paper she saw 2 German soldiers so she quickly put it back inside. When she was about to leave the streetcar she threw up on the soldiers. 20 people or so blocked the soldiers from getting to Lisa so she could escape. This quote is significant to the story because this was her first mission to fight back against the Germans. It's also significant because if the 20 or so people did not block the soldiers from Lisa she would have been caught for helping the resistance and because she’s Jewish they would put her into a concentration camp.

“She whispers to me, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’ She’s actually enjoying herself.

A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” (p.46)

When this quote happened Susanne had followed Stefan on his late night mission and asked him if she could help. She wanted to help to bring justice for her parents death and the fact that she felt as though she had nothing left to lose. Stefan brings them to the factory and tells Lisa and Susanne to pour kerosene in straight lines all the way to the explosives. After they do that they all run out of the factory and into the car. When they enter the car, seconds later the factory explodes. Susanne sees this and smiles; she says that it was for her “mama and papa”. This quote is significant to the story because Susanne now feels satisfied and happy that the lives of the German soldiers are now dead. When Lisa says that “ these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” She means that German soldiers when killing someone find happiness in doing it, and now an innocent 14 year old also finds happiness in killing someone. Therefore in a way they are similar to each other and Lisa feels that if we can be even somewhat similar to the Nazi’s then the Germans have now dragged them to their level.

“ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.” (p. 57)

When this quote happened Lisa’s father is telling them that Susanne has to go to her aunt and uncles because the Nazi’s are now trying to round up all the Jews. They feel that Susanne, who isn’t even jewish should not suffer just because she’s bestfriends with someone who is jewish. Lisa can’t deal with the fact that now the Nazi’s are rounding up the Jews. She feels as though she is like every other person but just because of her family background and culture she is in danger of being put into a concentration camp. This quote is very important to the story because the Nazi’s are now beggining to round up the Jews. It is also significant because Lisa feels that her entire life now revolves around her being jewish. Quoting Lisa “The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.” I feel that no one should ever be ashamed or disgusted by their culture and religion. I feel that it's really not fair for someone to be discriminated against just for your culture and religion as well. I feel that if Lisa were to be ashamed of her religion then that would mean she is really upset and I think that no one should ever go through that.

“ ‘I’m afraid there will be no service tonight at the synagogue,’ Father continues. ‘Rabbi Melchior told everyone at the early service that he’ll be closing the synagogue. He’s going on holiday.’

I almost laugh.. The rabbi going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah?

Then it hits me.” (p.62)

When this quote happened Lisa was really excited to go to the synagogue but then found out that Rabbi Melchior closed the synagogue as he’s on holiday. Hearing this news makes Lisa laugh because it is not a common thing for a Rabbi to be gone on holiday on Rosh Hashanah. It’s kind of like the church not being open on Christmas. She then realizes the real reason as to why the synagogue is closed. The Germans are trying to round up all the Jews at the synagogue. This quote is significant to the story because it shows just how much the Jews are in danger. They can be rounded up basically any time soon and sent to concentration camps.
