The negative effects of alcohol are, "It is classed as a depressant, meaning that it slows down vital functions—resulting in slurred speech, unsteady movement, disturbed perceptions and an inability to react quickly," (5). After regular and continuous usage, alcohol can also start to damage vital organs. People become addicted to effects of alcohol and they like how it "loosens" them up.

Tobacco is addictive due to the nicotine inside. The negative effects of it are, "It elevates heart rate and blood pressure, constricts blood vessels, irritates lung tissue, and diminishes your ability to taste and smell," (6).

In regards to Opioids, the textbook stated, "Opioids are medications that relieve pain. They reduce the intensity of pain signals reaching the brain and affect those brain areas controlling emotion, which diminishes the effects of a painful stimulus," (6). When used appropriately, they are fine. Some people become addicted to them because of the lack of pain they feel while on them.

Drew Barrymore and Addicition

I remembering reading about Drew Barrymore and her struggles with alcohol and substance abuse as a young child. When she was only 9 years old, her parents had divorced. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother began taking her to nightclubs almost every night at 9 years old. It was then that she began taking drugs and drinking alcohol. This shocked me because I could not imagine a nine year doing things like that and the fact that her mother was the one taking her to night clubs! Her mom later checked her into a mental institution at 13 years old and did not visit her very often at all. She was there alone for a year and a half!! She was then legally separated from her parents after that and moved into an apartment by herself!! At this point in her life, she is n longer addicted and strives to give her children a better childhood than she herself received. I have always liked Drew as an actress but after learning about all of her struggles, I truly admire her and all that she has overcome.
