My most unexpected takeaway is probably the hobbies and interesting facts of all my group members instead of like leading because i did not expect the session would be so good when i joined the Ylead introduction session, all of us were quite quiet and there was not much talking, i felt that the Ylead sessions would be boring because of that. However, the Ylead session is actually very good. The sessions led by the facils are very cool and fun, amber and yuxin were very good facils and the group members are also very fun to be with. I’m glad that my perception of Ylead changed over the 3 days and I hope that everyone is feeling good now ahhhahaha

Y.LEAD changed my perception by teaching me the importance of being able to think on the spot when leading in disruption. Initially, I thought that we will have a lot of time to think for ideas so it was very difficult for me to share my ideas with my teammates within the time constraint. However, afterwards I realised the need to think quickly in order to keep up with the pace of the activities and be able to keep the team going despite the influx of notifications and messages which stimulates an environment of disruption.

I learnt the importance of EFFECTIVE communication. I always knew communication is an important skill to have and it can determine the success of what I am doing. However, I came to understand that only with effective communication can we complete our tasks quicker and more efficiently. It makes the job a lot easier and less stressful as well. With effective communication, I am able to converse with my group mates better, avoiding small talk and misunderstandings. In future, I will make sure to not just talk to my group mates or members, but to really address any of the misunderstandings we have and really think of ways to complete our job better.

It also ended up really really nice and the sense of achievement that we shared was a great feeling. My group was also very cooperative and my facil was extremely helpful and overall it was an extremely fun experience. 10/10 would do it again.

My best memory from Y.LEAD was when we had to use the website gather town to complete our tasks and search for clues. I really like the interactive website and it makes the experience very fun. Instead of feeling like a task, that activity felt more like playing games with friends so it was super engaging and fun. And next time when I’m ever in the situation where I would have to come up with fun and engaging activities or what not, I can take inspiration from this also. (Special mention for when the facils were trying to hype us up to do the cheer after we finished our artefact homework thing. Our facils hen cute😩😩❤️)

Y.lead focuses its activities on current issues, like the Covid pandemic which has disrupted everyone’s lives, but with a twist. The organisers have made is interesting, the storyline is about clones attacking humans. The activities teach us skills that are essential to not just lead, but be part of a team, like taking the first step and initiating a discussion, and how effective cooperation is essential for the team to complete a task and move on. Through Y.lead, I have a deeper understanding of issues like discrimination, where I attended a talk which talked about hardship migrant workers faced and their ambitions. I can better empathise with others about the problems they face.

We discussed a lot and accepted each other’s ideas and focused on making our artefact as feasible and ideal as possible, along with our facil’s help. She helped us through various difficulties and was extremely patient. It was a very fun experience that allowed for a lot of bonding.

Learning how to engage and work together with people that are unfamiliar would also be useful for future project works. It was as if I was playing a computer game with my teammates and overall it was very engaging and interesting for me. Through the game, it not only allowed me to understand the importance of resilience, as it did take us quite some time to search out all the questions, but also the importance of teamwork and communication, as we had to talk to each other to share the questions that we have found, as well as to discuss about the answers to the questions.

Without one to start a discussion or continue it, ideas would not be generated and the whole progress would be very slow. Only when there is effective communication and proactiveness, one can have things done very efficiently and effectively, helping one another know each other’s strengths and weaknesses so that in a group work, parts will be distributed accordingly.

My most unexpected takeaway from Y.LEAD 2021 was that I learnt the importance of communication especially through online events. Due to Y.LEAD being carried out online but demanding of many collaborative activities, it really pushed me to take the step out to reach out to new peers and work together to complete tasks. Despite not having many opportunities to talk with all of them, I think that we still managed to communicate through whatsapp and other forms to sort our ideas. It was quite hard for me at first as I was a bit awkward with people that I dont really know but thankfully with the encouragement and guidance of our facils, we were pushed to communicate and work together as a group :D

I think that the difference between Y.LEAD and other leadership programmes is that for example, instead of telling us effective communication is important, it showed us instead. Through activities, it made us realise that effective communication is important when working in a team. One other difference would be the panel discussions. Other leadership programmes also had panel discussions which were with teachers and seniors who are successful. Whereas in Y.LEAD, actual field experts from government agencies were invited to join us for a short 1 hour or so. Despite it being 1 hour, I still managed to learn many things and gained quite a few insights as to what it means to be a leader in a field that is crucial in this age.

I think the best memory from this was on the day where my group members and I worked together as a team to solve the questions found in gathertown. It took quite awhile for everyone to find all the questions in the gathertown room, but we managed to complete the questions in the end. Pretty fun!!! I personally feel that gathertown was pretty cool mainly because of the interactive functions and the fact that we are even able to customise our own avatars. (wasnt what the question asked but HAHA)

I feel that the biggest difference in Y.LEAD between other leadership programmes is that we not only pick up valuable leadership skills, but also can use them to complete tasks together with group mates. This unique opportunity has allowed us to refine, showcase and develop our leadership skills, while also understanding the importance of leadership and making use of each other's skill sets. Y.LEAD also is much more interactive and interesting as compared to other camps, as we are given many opportunities to interact with our peers and amazing facils, while also working on various never before seen tasks.

However, through the IJ, I saw how the people around us have taken the initiative to progress and lead our community. Hence, YLEAD has inspired me to take more responsibility and step out of my comfort zone in times of need, especially when things are awkward due to the barriers posed by the online camp.

Y.LEAD has given me a wider perspective in terms of CHANGE (community, healthcare, etc.) and through the tight schedule that I followed in these 3 days, I learnt alot about how disruptions such as COVID-19 has impacted the society and the creative and smart ways that other leaders of society and organisations have come up with so as to lead us to find order in disruption. With the new perspectives, I am now better at looking at the overall bigger picture when leading a group. Furthermore and more specifically, the urgent message I received at night on Day 2 of Y.LEAD taught me that there are always unforeseen circumstances that are bound to happen in my time as a leader, and it is really up to every single person in the team to resolve the issues. With the morse code activity, I learnt the importance of being ready all the time, and I am more adaptable to new circumstances. I learnt that no matter what happens, I should always keep a cool head so the team can be kept together.

Before Y.LEAD, I hated things that are done through online means such as through zoom calls and to be honest I wasn't really looking forward to Y.LEAD that much due to it being conducted online. But i think that the facils managed to break the awkwardness and made us more comfortable making the experience really enjoyable for me. Also, my group mates were really good and would voluntarily lead discussions.

I have learnt through the various games the importance of communication, proactiveness and organisation. For each of the games, we are required to communicate effectively, succinctly and convincingly to everyone else so as to convey our ideas and thoughts. For example, in the game where we had to debate about a topic and work together to determine which of the projects are most important in the post-apocalyptic world, we needed to compromise and convey our ideas quickly and convincingly to ensure that we can get on with the task . We also needed to organise ourselves quickly and step up to lead and manage the task. Hence, this allowed me to recognise the importance of “quick organisation and carrying on with the tasks”.

The new interface was efficient as it had spotlight rooms which helped us form groups easily, without having to have multiple google meet links etc! The creative decorations built by the facilitators (<3) were also extremely fresh and exciting for the participants. The portals that lead to interesting games were also very new experiences!

My best memory from Y.LEAD 2021 is the rhc, where we had to solve the problem with some of our group mates and come up with an artefact to solve the problem. While coming up with an artefact with my group, I better understood the importance of teamwork and communication. We had to work together to come up with the solution, and we couldn’t have done it if we did not communicate with our group mates. Even though it wasn't easy, we managed to do it because we worked as a team, helping and encouraging one another. Through this, I got to work with new people and people that I'm not familiar with, so it was quite an enriching experience for me. Also, during the rhc, I managed to bond well with those in my group and I got to know them better, so I would say that this is one of my best memories in Y.LEAD 2021.

Before Y.LEAD, I’ve always played more of a passive role when it comes to group projects, letting someone else take the lead and designate roles for us to do. However, during Y.LEAD, I’ve realised that this method doesn’t work out all the time, and eventually everyone will be waiting for the “chosen one” that everyone unanimously agrees in silence when he/she chooses to relieve the awkward tension in the call. I’ve realised that sometimes you have to pluck up the courage to take charge and be the leader even if you dislike it, otherwise there’ll be no progress at all. So I guess Y.LEAD has developed the leadership in me - to take action first if no one is willing to do so

I think that skills such as taking the initiative as well as the importance of inclusivity among followers is very important, as it is not only important to be self-confident in leading/taking the initiative, we must also have good leadership; only through including everyone, can we progress well as a team and reach said target. Especially if the end product requires teamwork from all members of the party, it would be draining to tank all the work by one person, and also deprives people the opportunity to shine if we keep taking all the limelight of the ‘show’. Stepping back and giving people the opportunity to shine is also integral as a leader, to see the team shine not just from my own credit, but rather with everyones’ as well.

Meeting new people and working together with them also taught me the importance of communication and teamwork. Additionally, the use of online platforms such as gathertown and google meet is different from working together with people in real life, and hence i realised that communication is even more important and we need to express ourselves to allow others to understand more about us as a person. Hence, through this experience, i have learnt how to better communicate with people and get used to a new working environment quickly.

First of all, a soft skill that I have picked up from Y.LEAD is communication skills. I think that it is very important for a leader to know how to effectively communicate with his/her members. Y.LEAD has helped me to see how when communicating with each other, we need to be sensitive and careful about what we say, taking into account how those around us might feel upon hearing what we say, and to be confident in voicing out our opinions too. Secondly, a hard skill that I have picked up is on research, how to effectively and efficiently look for sources that are reliable by cross-checking and looking for information from various sources.

The riddles and questions were kind of interesting, but the problem given was pretty confusing and hard to understand, which was a challenge we faced, so proactiveness, teamwork and communications were important. I also learnt a lot of different skillsets such as communication, which you would not really get to learn much in other online camps, since most of them consists of mostly seminars and talks.

Without communication for the Rush Hour Challenge, Leadership Training sessions, it was very difficult to work through the problems and solve anything. Hence, I learnt to initiate conversations even with people I do not know and being more outspoken as a leader is very important.

I think that some skills that I can take away from Y.LEAD will be teamwork, the ability to be subject to changes, as well as being inclusive. I think that teamwork is definitely one of the most important skills that a leader should possess as it is critical to be able to get the group to work together. If I were to take up leadership positions in the future, I must have the ability to ensure that my group is working together as a team instead of just working separately. Secondly, I think that it is also essential to be able to be subject to changes as we never know what may be coming our way. For example, we were given a task just yesterday night that we have to solve a code at 7am in the morning, which was completely unexpected. To be a leader, it is important to always be prepared and be ready to have a change of plans if necessary. Lastly, being inclusive is the ability of not letting anyone feel left out during group discussions and getting all the members to participate actively. A leader should ensure that everyone has a chance to speak up and listen to all opinions, ensuring that everyone is included.

First of all, I don’t remember actually taking part in any leadership programmes so this is actually quite a unique experience

What I feel is quite unique for YLEAD is how it forces us to think more creatively and be more imaginative. The recent rush hour challenge sort of does so since it doesn’t limit us to just applying what is in the real world now to form a solution to the problem. It allows us to be able to be more creative and come up with new ideas that could possibly happen in the future but may not be possible now. I think this is quite nice since being creative is a requirement for innovation, I’m not sure whether this is right but in our VUCA world where change is the only thing that’s constant, new innovations are always welcome to resolve new issues that pop up in society.

-First skill I would apply is innovative thinking. A leader needs to be able to think out of the box when faced with challenges. This is important because in our VUCA world, problems will rise very quickly and often. A leader has to be able to adapt to any situation.

-Second skill is teamwork. Within a team, the leader is supposed to be the one most equipped with the value of teamwork. This means always getting the ball rolling, raising morale, ensuring everyone is on the same page at all times

-third skill is open mindedness. A leader has to firstly be accepting of his whole team, be open to their strengths and flaws. They must acknowledge that everyone should contribute their own ideas, and the leader has to be open to them (etc never judge anyone who is trying to express themselves)

This was achieved through ice breakers, where I have to communicate with people whom I have never interacted with. I have also learnt that teamwork is very important and no one stands alone. In the future, if I were to lead a team, I would have to ensure that no one is left out or left behind. Furthermore, Y.LEAD has taught me to be resourceful, through activities such as the one relating to budget. We have to plan and reason to make an informed decision. Planning ahead and being resourceful is essential when leading a team. Y.LEAD has also taught me to lend everyone a listening ear and be open to everyone’s ideas.

Y.LEAD brings many people together even across the levels (s3,s4,jc), allowing us to meet more people and have greater diversity, instead of being with the same few people in other leadership programmes. Furthermore, this time Y.LEAD is carried out online, making it even more unique. The Gathertown website was also used to make the entire experience memorable and interesting. :D

Personally, my favourite memory is us group(d55) members jamming to music from a uniquely d55 playlist of 55 of our favorite songs. ViBiNg to the music and having a fun time together was really nice because it shows the progression from being complete strangers to bonding as a group, learning more together, just being more comfortable with each other, and most importantly, leading together. <3

Y.LEAD taught me to adapt quickly. Whether it is in collaborating with new people, or being challenged with tasks out of a sudden, I have learnt to be more accepting towards changes. This is extremely relevant in today’s context, where the world is constantly changing and unpredictable. The environment around us is dynamic and may not always turn out to be what we are comfortable with. Hence, we need to step out of our comfort zone.

I think that through YLEAD, it has taught me the importance of teamwork because each of us in the group have different strengths and weaknesses and working together as a group effectively can enable us to complete the task faster. Another important skill that YLEAD has taught me would be communication. Some of the tasks that were assigned to us had time limitations and hence it was important to communicate efficiently, in order to get our message across to our group members so as to come up with a solution that would address the problem

Y.LEAD has taught me to take initiative in leading the discussions if people do not talk. This is an important quality as a leader, where they have to ensure the constant communication between group members, if not the project would go nowhere.
