Hi and welcome to my Padlet Wall! A little bit about me... My name is Morgan Mahler and I am a freshman at the University of Texas. I am from the suburbs of Chicago Illinois. Currently my major is undeclared, but I am hoping to transfer into the nursing program here at UT after this semester. One of my hobbies outside of school is figure skating which I have participated in my whole life and at one point competed in. On top of that I am obsessed with my dog Rocky who is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and is the cutest thing. Growing up in a house that only speaks english and a town that is not very culturally diverse, I am really looking forward to this class and broadening my perspective of how to interact with those with different backgrounds than I do. I think the skills learned in this class will be very applicable to my life as I really do enjoy traveling and I can apply this new knowledge when visiting new and foreign places.

This article is about a mother who under President Trumps new immigration laws faces the dilemma that she may be deported yet her children will be allowed to stay here. This is an example of the United States univerasalist mindset as they are just thinking about authority and rules of the law and not the emotional factors that play into the law. Because of this new law a family may be broken apart, yet with the universalist mindset the law is above all of these emotional factors

This picture is a political cartoon comparing the severity of US universalism to Singapore a particularist country. It shows a long line with a man trying to skip the line by saying that his father is the person in charge of the lines boss. In the universalist society this statement means nothing as having higher status in society doesn't mean you get to avoid the rules set in place. On the contrary in the particularist nation this information is totally taken into account and benefits the higher standing individual.

This block is in reaction to the unconstitutionality of this law and the backlash it has been receiving. This ban is going against the national mindset and law as they believe that a woman's rights should not be controlled by the government which is more on the particularist side of the spectrum.

This political cartoon shows and everyday citizen parked in a handicap parking spot outside a coffee shop. It appears that a cop is coming up to confront him, to this he responds by saying he considers himself handicap before his morning coffee. Although this is funny it is proving the point of particularism. One's emotions and the circumstance overrules the land of the law which in the case of him getting his morning coffee it does.

It depicts interns fighting and competing against each other in hopes they will be able to scrub into surgeries for their own personal reward. I lived in this village for 3 weeks and in class when we were talking about community the first thing that I thought of were the people in this town. In this town the people all grow their own crops and each play a role in the society as they are self sufficient and help eachother live a prosperous life. This is representative of a Diffuse society as not just the kicker was punished for missing the kick, but instead the whole team suffered the loss together. Sports teams in them self are little diffused societies as they all depend on one another to succeed.

In a Specific society like the US work and personal relations are kept separate. To counter this in Japan, a Diffuse society, the picture shows all the colleagues with their boss having dinner together. This shows that their personal relationships and work are very well mixed together.

A boy who is raised in a poor environment with lacking opportunity is taken in by Sandra Bullock's character. Here he transforms into a great student and a star football player. In the end he makes it to the NFL. This story of achievement is one that is admired in an achievement society as he paved his own path to success from a bad situation and made it big.

The Caste system is one which you are born into and it determines the life in which you will live. You don't earn your position in society it is one which you are given at birth. A trait of an ascribed society the Caste system has created is a one of false superiority which is a cause of the great divide in the quality of life between those at the top and those at the bottom. This false sense of superiority is so extreme that those at the bottom, the "untouchables" are outcasts in society and are treated as though they are less than human being an extreme negative of what this type of society can create.

Truly what they are making fun of in this film is a major downfall of an ascribed society which is the incompetent being elevated without having actual skills leading to the inability to easily remove a dictator as the society has become brainwashed to believe this person is superior. At the end of this film they are able to finally break the loyalty of the dictator's followers and overthrow the leader but it is just trying to show the extremes the country of North Korea's ascribed society has created and why the country continues to run the way it does.
