I think it is a great idea to have students create videos or podcasts to present speeches rather than standing up in front of the class. This way students with anxiety can feel a little bit calmer because they could record their speech and then if they messed up, they could rerecord it until they got it just right.

I think that this could be a deal breaker for some students. There are some students that are not able to be on the spot and give a speech, but could, on there own time sit down and create a video or podcast. Great Idea!

For instance the first assignment may be to record your speech in a podcast form post it and review two other classmates. Then the next assignment it could be a video recording so they get used to having to make eye contact. Then finally speak in front of the class.

I think students should not be allowed to create a video or podcasts for their speeches rather than presenting them. They should not be allowed to do this because they will not be gaining the public speaking skills that people get when presenting in front of people. It is important that they gain those skills because they will be useful in the future when they start working and they need to communicate with others.

If students are allowed to create videos or podcasts of their speeches, then there would not be any point in making students take an oral communications course. After all, oral communications courses are designed to help students become better speakers in front of groups of people. By allowing students to record or video their speeches, they lose the element of practicing speaking in front of people.
