What i noticed is that the student centered form of teaching promotes a growth mindset. Instead of the teacher doing a lot of the work to push information into the students heads, the teacher creates and environment that is helps build that idea. I thought is was interesting as now that we've discussed growth mindset, I can see it in a lot of different way we get taught.

8. Choosing 'power standards' from your curriculum after meeting with students, parents, and members of community to determine societal and cultural needs.

I think this is important and pretty powerful because it lets the students intertwine the world they experience outside of school and the stuff they learn while at school. Doing this helps facilitate knowledge, understanding of the world, a value system, an application of the subjects they learn, and a critically thinking mindset. Basing what your students learn off of what your students need seems so simple and intuitive, but it is not that way for some teachers.

This solution could help them just like those extra minutes could, but it would also help them emotionally and keep them from feeling isolated.

And throughout the years of doing it I have less and less of a drive to do them because of how often I have to. So maybe if some were considered practice and maybe I didn't have to do all the work I would have kept the same drive to do them like I had from the start.

Choosing what's graded carefully

This stood out to me because I think a lot of teachers feel the need to grade a lot of assignments, which could be good for getting grades up, but hard when practice activities aren't perfect yet. It also makes it difficult for a student that falls behind to make up for every little assignment posted. I think especially dealing with younger grades it's hard for little kids to understand a need to turn things in on time and try to get the best score.

They know the expectations and they know if they don't follow them their grade will suffer. Also, it's important to give the kids a heads up before starting the assignment 1) so they know what to do. 2) They know your expectations.

Modeling ‘how to think‘ for students
Teaching kids in ways that are student-centered are going to benefit them a lot more. In this example you can tell a kid to think and they can try, but if they don't know how, it is not going to help them. By teaching kids how to do things and making sure they understand, they can learn a lot better.

If students only receive a letter grade for something, they have no idea what to work on in order to do better in the future. If they don't get any feedback, the assignment was pointless. The student will do it exactly the same in the future unless they get pointed feedback on what aspects were great and how to improve the parts that weren't so good.

What stood out to me was the giving students a rubric or scoring guide, this allows students to know what they need to do in their work that will allow them the best possible grade. This also kind of bothers me because every student is in a different place in learning and basing everyone's grades off the same standards makes it hard for kids who struggle to succeed and makes school more difficult because it's not based on the individual student.

One thing that stood out to me was point 7, letting students pick either the purpose or outcome of a project. To me when I think of a teacher centered class I think that the teacher gets to make all of the decisions, but point 7 shows that the students still get to make choices. This also stood out to me because students tend to perform better if they are working on a project over something they are passionate about to by letting the student pick the purpose of a project they truly get to pick something they enjoy, and even if the student picks the outcome of a project they still get to pick an outcome of something they would enjoy creating.

One thing that stood out to me was the generalities of teacher-focused vs student-focused. Teacher focused is much more straightforward, and has clear guidelines. It is also the style that is most reflected in teaching policies put forth by schools up to the federal government. In all honesty, I don't think that it would be possible for most teachers to be even 50/50 with how education is currently structured.

Number 15 stood out to me the most because it shows that students don't always need to focus on the grade they recieve. Some things are just for practice and don't matter how amazing it is, especially when they are focusing on a specific skill that they need to master. This also works opposite for the kids who do need to treat it like a grade because some kids need that to be successful.

Number 11 stood out to me because I believe that student participation is one of the most important steps of learning. Giving students time to speak up is beneficial because it will teach them how to comfortably express their opinions to a group of people.

Number 5 was interesting to me because so many times we learn all this information that isn't needed. I think it is helpful to create the curriculum centered around need to know information to best help the students. Instead of getting a bunch of information thrown at them that isn't necessarily as important, they will get to learn more in depth about the crucial material.

What stood out to me was number 6- collaborating with the students to create the rubric or scoring guide. i think this is really interesting because I have never seen this happen before, and I think it could really help to make sure they understand exactly what they need to do to be successful.

Number 15 stood out to me because I have some teachers who give points for everything, which is nice because it helps cushion the grade if we don't do as good on a project that is weighted more heavily, but it also means there are more opportunities to get a bad grade, especially if you don't understand the content, you probably won't do through all the assignments if you don't understand
