I think that Mr. Padilla did say the right thing to his students. He didn't sugar-coat his critique of their performance, but truthfully shared his impression. Rather than being offended by his observation the students used his words to inspire a higher level of practice and performance. The best coaches, teachers, mentors speak the truth to their athletes and students, but do so in a positive, productive manner. They do not get results from their pupils by harshness or fear- like the cold north wind, instead they inspire greatness- like the sun, by their warmth and encouragement.

After the bands loss at the Vargas Mariachi Extravaganza, they practiced really hard and found a piece of music that they felt expressed a lot of emotions, to make it a heartfelt show. The band got together everyday to practice and perfect the music that they would be playing at the State Competition. The failure at the Vargas Mariachi Extravaganza really made the band open their eyes and realize that it was going to take a lot of practice and effort to win the State Competition. The quest for excellence in my opinion was made a little easier after their loss at the Vargas Mariachi Extravaganza because they had a chip on their soldier and felt like they had something to prove. The band also felt as if they had to uphold their schools reputation in succeeding at the State Competition year in and year out.

The band lost at the Vargas Mariachi Extravaganza. It showed them it would take a lot of effort to win the State Competition. They recovered from this by focusing and practicing hard. They honed their skills to be better. They recoreded their practices and didn''t allow mistakes. They failed at the Extravaganza. However instead of taking failure as ultimate defeat, they took it as a challenge. Their loss motivated them to be better. Their failure made them strive for greatness.

They had went back home to their school and had a little talk on how they were going to get better and what they need to do to become state champs. The bands failure had also been almost perfected with all the work and time they had done that was from when they performed the first time.

I think my reaction comes from the fact that mariachi music isn’t always talked about as much in school music programs, so I didn’t realize how advanced it could be. You could tell they practiced a lot and really cared about what they were doing. Their pride in their culture and their dedication to the music helped them perform at such a high level. I was surprised by the skills and professionalism shown. The major reason for this is because I lack exposure to Mariachi in general. Being from Nebraska, I don't get many opportunities to experience live Mariachi. Listening to a high school play at a level of Mariachi that sounds like the recordings that I've listened to surprised me. With more exposure to Mariachi, I'd be able to understand recordings and live performances more, but since I lack exposure, I lack expectations. This would result in me being surprised by a high school's live Mariachi performance with such professionalism.
