He likes to talk.” (Remarque 26)

Remarque succeeds in bringing the reader along with the characters by not only describing the physical setting, but more importantly the scent, temperature, and conversational environment of the characters. The detail the author uses when describing the setting -- such as it being sunny and smelling like tar and feet-- creates a mood that is both pleasant, due to the sun, but a little alarming, due to the unpleasant odors.

(Remarque 28)

This quote uses vivid imagery of melting flesh to appeal to the reader's sense of disgust. The intense physical description shocks the reader by throughly describing a human body dying on the war front. The "bulging," "melting" skeleton is described in such detail to emphasize and prove the brutal violence of war to the reader.

"He sits down to eat as thin as a grasshopper and gets up as big as a bug." (Remarque 3)

The author uses two similes here to describe Tjaden's hunger, and the large amount that he usually eats. It gives the image of a kid as skinny as a grasshopper sitting down to eat who ends up eating so much that when he stands up afterwards his stomach bigger than a pregnant bug. This comparison of Tjaden to two different insects (a thin grasshopper and a pregnant bug) allows the reader to easily visualize just how much of a big eater Tjaden is.

A couple of minutes later another comes over, nearer this time. Kat knocks out his pipe. 'We're in for it.'" (Remarque 60)

In this passage the tone is both fearful and tense, as the soldiers are getting ready for to fend themselves from the bombardment. Although Kat tries to distract everyone with a little joke about shells's explosion looking like fireworks, everyone is very serious and on guard. The recruits in particular are portrayed as fearful about the situation, since this is their first time dealing with a bombardment in war. The tense tone help to reveal the extent of their fear.

“I sit tensely and watch his every movement in case he may perhaps say something.” (Remarque 31)

Remarque indirectly characterizes Paul as loyal by portraying his relationship with his comrade, Kemmerich. Paul takes care of him when the orderlies treat him like trash, and Remarque illustrates this level of caring by saying that Paul sits tensely and watches his every movement. This displays the fact that Paul will always be with his friends and will never lead their side. The evidence shows that Paul will always remain true towards his country and his comrades, and shows his devotion to his service, even when he is treated inadequately.

It is not common for the average person to carry around a lump of fat in their pocket, so when it was described in the quote it was surprising to imagine. It is in perpetual movement, punctuated with the bursts of flame from the nozzles of the batteries. Through the use of the words such as “balls of light” and “showers,” Erich depicts the world around him as he sees it. The use of Imagery also adds how the reader perceives this event, as it adds a slight hint of tone to the scenario. The “red glow” can be perceived as the gunshots thrown to and from the opposing sides, which is in “perpetual movement.” The imagery used in this quote adds an extra layer of depth to how one might perceive the true realization of war.
