Coming of Age/ Identity

The "Coming of Age" basically represents how Mrs. Sanders offered a ticket to Jeannette in order to take the opportunity to go to New York. Instead Jeannette sees the unfairness Lori has lived in her life with trying to save some money in order to move away from home and sadly Rex has stolen the money and used it to buy alcohol and commit irresponsible choices. Such as stealing the money in the first place and spending it in a negative way. Moving away from home has brought Lori a deep pride to herself and as time goes on the goal is for Brian and Jeannette to soon move away as well from home. A quote from the "The Glass Castle" in page 228 states that " I began looking through all the junk in the bedroom to stash them in OZ. Oz was on the floor someone had slashed him apart with a knife" this represents that Rex had done it since no one else would be malicious to do that to Lori.

The coming of " Self Sufficiency" talks about The owner, publisher, and editor in chief Mike Armstrong where Lori had helped Jeannette get a job turned to be a success. This explains that Mike has put eyes on Jeannette and has given her an opportunity to work as a full time reporter for " The Phoenix". As stated in" The Glass Castle" on page 248

"I've never been happier in my life" Jeannette says. This is a huge accomplishment for Jeannette since she grew up without her parents being there for none of the children and their childhood being a disaster with Rex's drinking problems to her finding a job and upgrading from her last one that was working at a hamburger joint. Lori wants Brian to come to New York with them but he seems to be more of a country boy rather than a city kid. Lori wants all three siblings to move out of Welch away from Rose Mary and Rex as Lori is gone from Welch she sends letters to Brian and Brian tells her that Rex has still his drinking problem unless he's in jail and Rose Mary just focused on her paintings.

According to the book in page 256-257 Jeannette is right in many ways to quote that her parents are in " down in luck". This basically refers that people get what they earn in life based on either their hard work or not standing on business and being irresponsible. Rex and Rose Mary as parents should be responsible enough to take care of they're children and be there present at all times as parents. A Perfect example of hard work pays off is Lori, she was once living in Welch with her parents but she started working hard to buy a ticket in order to move to New York. She is currently succeeding in her promise to moving away from home in a better environment.

A quote stated in "The Glass Castle" " No point in building a good house unless you put down the right foundation" on page 155 Rex stated. This proves that Rex was complying with Brian and Jeannette to help out by digging holes at an abandoned place they have found in order to built the house. A month later has passed by and the hole was big enough thanks to Brian and Jeannette. Rex's responsibility was to to hire a truck to cart the garbage to the dump all at once since garbage was piling up in the hole but he never got the chance to do so, therefore he gave up and whatever money he has gained was spend on alcohol.

According to " The Glass castle" on page 110 Brian states " One afternoon Brian and I have come home to an empty fridge". This shows that Brian and Jeannette had to survive by looking behind the house through an alley for bottles to redeem in order to get some food. They have found some interesting things such as cardboard boxes filled with loose chocolates. Rose Mary was always too busy and would not make any dinner for the children therefore they would go back to the dumpster to find more moldy chocolate.
