This means achieving regular physical activity i.e. 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per-week, or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per-week. This threshold is worryingly not being reached by 25% of university students

Some issues that were discussed were my mentees lack of motivation towards activities that weren't GAA based and his unwillingness to participate in morning activities. This resulted in my discovering that this was due to his bad sleeping ritual, usually resulting in him not going to bed before 1am and therefore not wanting to get up early to compensate.

On the first day of the program we met up with Gillian who gave some background on herself and on the whole concept of the program. We were told that we each were going to have to pick a mentee for the semester. Programs were instructed to be as convenient as possible so that the mentee remained interested. We also discovered the role of the three officers and the MoveMentors. It was explained that the mentor, which I was, had two roles; 1) To motivate a mentee to become physically active and 2) To complete a case study. We learned that the MoveMentee must be over the age of 18, willing to participate but not currently meeting the physical activity guidelines as set out by the World Health Organisation. We also learned about the theory of connectivism from (Siemens, 2005) who states - How people and technology are now interacted. The pipe is more important than the knowledge that flows through it.
At the end of class we were given a consent form that we had to have filled out for the coming week.

In Week Two we were still in the process of picking our mentee. We did an active class session which took place in the Food Science Building. We actively participated in a 7 minute circuit lead by Gillian that can be used on our Mentee’s. We learned skill related components and also found out how to calculate max heart rate with a formula called the Karvonen Formula (220-age). Finally we were told that this program is not just about exercise or step count or so on but actually making our mentee a healthier person as a whole. This involves healthy eating, sleeping well, staying hydrated, and also ensuring that our mentees mental health is ok. At the end of class we were given a Par-Q Form and a Consent Form for our mentee to fill out.

Finally we individually analysed our MoveMentee making three categories:

1. Description e.g. Height, Age, Rural/Urban, Personality.

2. Needs e.g. Motivation, encouragement, consistency.

3. Insight e.g. Often laid back, lacks confidence.

My Mentees motivation has significantly increased since the beginning of the programme.

Week five was a reflective week as such. We discussed problems and issues in which we'd faced thus far. Gillian and Fiona then introduced new measures that we had to follow to try solve any complications we were having. Firstly we had to email Gillian each week with an update on how the week went with our mentee i.e. how active the mentee was, how motivated they were etc. What was also agreed in the class was that mentees and mentors should meet at least once a week to discuss how they felt that week went and what areas they could improve on for the coming weeks.
We also had a deeper look into design thinking. Fiona introduced the class to the four stages of design thinking:
1. Empathy = Mentee
2. Ideation = All ideas we have had for the club.
3. Development = What ideas have actually developed into props to be used for the club. E.G, shortening down the initial surveys for the mentees.
4. Implementation = How the club works as a whole after the start up process.

In terms of my mentees activity levels this week I was pleased. His motivation to do activities this week was good and we did a rather unusual but really enjoyable activity down in Farran Rowing Center.

Open water rowing is an all body sport, toning your arms, legs, chest, back, and abs. Rowing is also recognized as a complete cardiovascular workout which is highly aerobic and burns calories quickly. What most people don't realize is that rowing improves joint health through a wide range of motion. Eoghan and I both have had experience of rowing before, albeit limited, so we knew the basics starting out.

It was in Week Four when I finally came to grips with my role as a mentor. I was in regular contact with my mentee at this point and we met up around 3 times a week to exercise. However, my mentees motivation at this point was only average and he needed a lot of encouragement to get him out exercising.

First I decided to have a closer look at what resistance training actually is. Resistance training is a form of exercise that improves muscular strength and endurance. During a resistance training workout, you move your limbs against resistance provided by your body weight, gravity, bands, weighted bars or dumbbells. Some exercise machines can also be used for resistance training.Guidelines recommend that young people engage in muscle-strengthening activities on at least 3 days per week (KENNEDY et al., 2018).
