Throughout the story, Della had perceived Jim to be very happy with his new chain for his watch. I know this because Della states "WIth that chain on his watch, Jim could look at his watch and learn the time anywhere he might be." This shows how Della had expected to see Jim love his gift. However, Della had sold her hair in order to get this watch. When Jim came home after a day of work, he sees his present and is shocked. In order to get Della's present, he had sold his watch. Jim was very grateful but he did not have a watch to put the chain on. The reality is that both Della and Jim gave up something they loved for each other. The lesson learned here is that giving is more important than receiving and it is the thought that counts. Della and Jim both gave up a lot for each other's presents even though they did not work out, Jim and Della both ended up happy.

When Jim sold his watch in order to buy a brand new set of combs for Della, he had perceived her to be excited and happy with her fancy combs for her hair. I know this because Jim was shocked when he saw Della with no hair when he walked in. The text states "He seemed not to feel sure he knew." Jim is in shock when he sees Della without hair because he had bought her combs for her hair. The reality is that Della was still thankful for her gift and both of them had a happy Christmas because they had thought of each other.

Miss Fairchild perceived Mr. Easton to be a marshall. The reality is that Mr. Easton is arrested by the man sitting next to him on the train, who really is a marshal. Miss Fairchild believes this because the other man sitting next to Mr. Easton is dressed more roughly and also states "You'll excuse me for speaking, miss, but, I see you're acquainted with the marshall here." This shows how the real marshall lied and made it look like Mr. Easton was the marshall. This is very kind of the real marshall because Mr. Easton is going to jail and the real marshall did not embarrass him in front of a pretty lady he knew.

Ben Price had perceived Jimmy to be a dirty, untruthful bank robber. I know this because when Ben Price hears about more bank robberies occurring, he states “I can see that Jim Valentine has been here. He is in business again." At first, this is true. Jimmy uses his burglar tools to steal from banks. However, as the story goes on and Jimmy falls in love, and Jimmy changes as a person and stops stealing from banks and starts his own little business. We know for sure that Jimmy has changed when Jimmy risks everything he has in order to save a girl who is locked in the bank vault. Jimmy uses his burglar tools in front of everybody including his true love and Ben Price. Ben Price also changes his perception on Jimmy at the end of the story. After Jimmy saves the little girl from the vault Ben finally realized that Jimmy was longer a bad person and had done a great deed. At the end of the story, Ben perceived Jimmy to be a good man who is trustworthy and loyal. This teaches a lesson that people can always change and improve themselves. We should always give people a chance to change.

Annabel Adams perceived Jimmy Valentine to be a great guy and a very honorable man. I know this because when the girl became locked in the vault, Annabel states “Can’t you do something, Ralph? Try, won’t you?” This shows how much Annabel trusted Ralph/Jimmy and how much she believed in him. The reality is that Jimmy has not always been a moral person. Jimmy used to use his burglar tools to steal from many banks and was planning to steal from her father's bank. However, Jimmy forgot his old behavior when he fell in love with Annabel Adams.

All three stories taught a lesson when it came to perception versus reality. They showed us to either give people another chance, that giving is more important than receiving, and to never judge a book by it's cover. However, Jim and Della had expected to see each other be happy with their gifts, while Ben Price and Annabel Adams had perceived Jimmy's personality not his actions.

I had perceived the man sitting next to Mr. Easton to be a criminal. I thought this because the text states "the other a ruffled, glum-faced person, heavily built and roughly dressed. The two were handcuffed together." This tells me that this man is the one getting arrested because his expression is glum and is dressed poorly, the man seems a little bit of a mess to me. The reality is that this man is the marshall arresting Mr. Easton. This teaches the lesson to never judge a book by it's cover because I had perceived the other man to be a criminal just because of his facial expressions and clothing. I really had no idea about this man's personality or attitude.
