Our first project was based on "Greek theatre" I believe that was a great topic to work on since we all know Greece is known for Greek tragedy.
Kos our Drama teachers was very well educated about the play that he gave us and told us to do some research based on Assembly Women and Bacchae.
After we all done our research we were given two different scripts for each.

When we started rehearsing our first play “The Bacchae” we were split into 4 groups.
Each group had a 2 small paragraphs to work on.
My group was given the 5th and 6th paragraph. Learning it was very easy and fun, I believe we all enjoyed working with each other since we were all so hard working. We first started off by just reading out the lines to each other and understanding the meaning of the play. Then Kos told us that he would like us to add some dancing in the beginning of the play to create a party Vibe just like the first line says “From Asia I’ve come to dance”
We then worked on adding some movement in the play, I personally found that part really hard since it was a chorus and I wasn’t sure how to act or what facial expressions to make but after rehearsing it a lot of time it would came naturally to me. One of the greatest ideas I believe I had was when the lines said “ The land flows with milk, the land flows with wine, the land flows with honey “ we would look left and right as we’re saying it and look surprised because it’s something that never happens.

To understand what the play was about a bit better I did some research on Google and here is what I found :

Wikipedia:

Written: By Euripides.

Chorus: Bacchae, female followers of
Dionysus.

Genre: Tragedy.

Original language: Ancient Greek.

The tragedy is based on the Greek myth of King Pentheus of Thebes and his mother Agave, and their punishment by the god Dionysus (who is Pentheus's cousin). The god Dionysus appears at the beginning of the play and proclaims that he has arrived in Thebes to avenge the slander, which has been repeated by his aunts, that he is not the son of Zeus. In response, he intends to introduce Dionysian rites into the city, and he intends to demonstrate to the king, Pentheus, and to Thebes that he was indeed born a god. At the end of the play, Pentheus is torn apart by the women of Thebes and his mother Agave bears his head on a pike to her father Cadmus.

Wikipedia link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bacchae

Another website I had a look at was (LitCharts) it had quiet a a lot more informations about “The Bacchae” and here is some:

<var> The Chorus Character Analysis |</var>

The chorus is a group of Bacchae that Dionysus accumulated during his journeying through Asia. They don’t get involved in the action, but serve as a way of heightening the drama. For example, they invoke the “hounds of madness” in anticipation of Pentheus’ murder. In general, the chorus acts as a kind of commentary in the action—but in this case, they’re undoubtedly biased towards Dionysus.

<var>Zeus Character Analysis |
</var>
Zeus is the king of the Greek gods and the father of Dionysus. He doesn’t appear in the play, but is in important part of Dionysus’ back story. Zeus killed Semele, Dionysus’ mortal mother, when she was tricked by Hera, Zeus’ wife, into asking him to reveal his divine form—a deadly lightning storm.

<var>Semele Character Analysis |
</var>
Semele is Dionysus’ mortal mother, the daughter of Cadmus, and the sister of Agave, Ino, and Autonoe. Semele was killed accidentally by her lover, the supreme god Zeus, when he took on the form of a lightning storm. Though she never appears on the stage, she is a major reason for Dionysus’ presence in Thebes. Since her death, rumors spread that her lover was a mortal, and that she had invented the Zeus to protect her dignity. Dionysus has come to prove his godliness and thereby restore honor to his mother’s name.

I found this website much more useful because it gave me a better understanding about each character on the play.

Link : https://www.litcharts.com/lit/the-bacchae/characters/the-chorus

Lastly I decided to have a look on YouTube and I found a really good YouTuber “Millennial Classicist” and she has load of videos based on “The Bacchae” the one that I watched was The chorus in Euripides
Bacchae and I really loved the way she was explaining things it gave me a full image about the whole play.

<sub>

</sup>

Lastly Kos gave us some props to use to make the performance more interesting.
Each of us were given white masks to wear in the back of our heads and I was also given a Tambourine.
Masks always served several important purposes in Ancient Greek theater they were mostly used in tragedy’s and comedy’s and in my opinion it was the most interesting part. I was quiet disappointed we didn’t get to wear them properly i believe the audience wouldn’t have to pay attention to our facial expressions to understand how we feel they’d understand by the tone in our voices and it would’ve made the play more interesting.
I used the tambourine to count people in their positions there was 6 beats by the 6th one they should be up and ready to
perform :)
We didn’t have any costumes although we had to wear plain black clothes and shoes so our clothing don’t attract the audiences attention.

My group and I didn’t face any major problems apart from the dancing and movements we had to do.
I am from greece and I know a lot about how people in greece dance so since we had to use a dance I thought I teach them the easiest one I know. They struggled to learn it so we didn’t do it, I believe if we had more time they would’ve learned it but that was only a minor problem. We solved that by making up a fake dance that looked similar to the one I was trying to teach them and it worked pretty well.
Another small problem we had was the facial expressions we had to make and movements. We didn’t really have any facial expressions in our play and the movements came naturally to us after rehearsing the play multiple times. It still didn’t look bad I believe it looked really good.

The performance went really well i worked with new people that I didn’t know much about them or how they are in Acting. We are all very hard working and we created a friendly and happy inviroment to work on.
I was very nervous and it was very weird to me since I have been performing ever since I was little I thought I shouldn’t be feeling nervous and because it got to me I messed up on some parts and lost all my confidence but I’m happy it happened because if it never happened I wouldn’t know how to react if it is to happened again. I’m proud I continued and didn’t let it stop me. There is always a first time I guess.
On the “ The Bacchae” play everything went excellent and as planned but the second one was where everything went wrong for me.
After the show ended, I was happy I wasn’t sad, I was actually laughing it off what happened didn’t matter to me after the show I was just positive about everything. My feedback for the next performance is to not overthink my lines before I go on stage and to speak slower and louder.

Assembly women was based on Comedy, we were split in groups of 4 and each one of us had a role to play.

First old woman: Nukelda
Second old woman: Lilia
Young man: Emilis
Young lady : Christina (me)

Each group had to perform it in front of each other with the script. In my opinion it was really helpful we did it that way because we would receive a feedback straight away from Kos and he gave us a better understanding of the play and how to act it out. Then on the third day he let us work on it alone and and add our own ideas to make it more funny. My group and I were very organised with it, we spent lots of time rehearsing it and none of the people were hard to work with.

In addition to Aristophanes' political and social satire, Assemblywomen derives its comedy through sexual and scatological humor.
