In regards to the fighter jet/pilots, many of the top pilots would have never fit inside a cockpit with the "average" (regular) design. With the adjustments made, the pilots were able to fit inside of the cockpit. This is exactly what assistive technology is about. Adjustments were made to the "average" cockpit to ensure all pilots were able to fly comfortably. In the classroom, everyone is sitting in the same designed desk/chair, depending on what the district provides, not everyone is able to adjust and sit at that desk/chair. We catch students slouching, or not sitting up straight, but did we ever think about how it is because of the design of their workplace? What if they are not "bored" and they are just trying to be comfortable, but can't because the design doesn't allow them? Not all students can adjust to the set design of their desk/chair.

Roughly 6 minutes into the video, Todd Rose mentions that every year, over 1 million students drop out of school. 4% of those students are gifted, which equals about 50,000 students. He mentions that students, teachers, and parents are those to be quickly blamed. But he raises the question that what if the designs of our education systems are to blame due to poor design? I can agree to this because the math program that we use in my district makes no sense to me and is often very confusing to the students. If we were able to teach a more practical way, students could be more successful. I think this video is relevant to our class because we can give students AT to help them conquer these poor designs in our educational system.

They can set up the classroom in a specific way and they can seat students in a specific way. During the pandemic that was all taken away. The effect is that the students now need to create the effective learning environment for themselves. During the first week of school I was able to facilitate in that. We talked about what we need in order to be successful learners. Students were then able to make that decision as to where they wanted to work.

The SETT framework really helps generate equality for the students because you first start with the student. You look at strengths and what is lacking and this really helps to determine what the child needs. You are not starting with a general change that "all students get" because one student might need something different. By looking at student needs, everyone stays equal because you are giving them what they need.

To me, the word consideration means that the IEP team has identified a students needs and collectively asks two questions. One, "does technology exist that could help address this child's needs and make them more independant?" Secondly, and if the answer to first question is yes, "what are we going to do to ensure that the student is able and willing to use the technology." I also think that there needs to be consideration as to if technology that has been implemented in the past is still relevant, being used, and worth continuing.

Learning environments have changed significantly due to the pandemic. For example, my district is using primarily in seat instruction with the exception of the students who chose to work from home. Typically, the teachers rotate to each classroom but since the spike in cases, the district modified our model to still be in person but to teach virtually to our other classes from within our homeroom. In this case, the students still get on the bus in the morning and come to school, but they are receiving mostly virtual instruction throughout the day. This has been deemed more effective than virtual learning from home because the students now have the help of the paraprofessionals within the classroom. The pandemic has forced schools to come up with creative ways to teach our students during this very difficult time; and with that said, what is most effective is always changing because there are so many factors to consider.

There was also the benefit that the environment was fairly consistent or at least following a steady and reliable change. Ask any grade school teacher and they will be the first to tell you about their students pointing out how they moved the plant from one spot in the classroom to the other. Now the school "environment" consists of potentially any room in the students house, their babysitters house, their family members house. Something very dynamic.

For starters, a majority of teachers are not even able to be in a classroom with their students. Their environment has now turned into a zoom session. This alone is a huge impact on educators. We are used to being in front of our kids and walking over to them if they need help. Having class over the computer makes things extremely difficult. While we can still answer questions and assist, it is drastically different than being right in front of the students to help them. I find this especially harder in the younger grades where students do not display much independence.

I have been fortunate enough to be able to be with my students in person 5 days a week , with the exception of a virtual day every other Wednesday. Even in person, the pandemic causes barriers. I am not able to hug my students, they cannot work in groups or partnerships, they cannot have recess or lunch during the school day, etc. These little things make a huge difference in a elementary school students' life. First off, there is a constant switch between learning from home through Zoom and learning at school in person depending on the amount of COVID cases in the school building. For students who need a routine, this can be very challenging. Also, students are learning behind a clear divider. They have trouble hearing their teacher and peers talk. I work with students in Kindergarten and the pandemic has changed the way that they can interact with their peers. Students who struggle with executive functioning have difficulty with remote learning. This year, I have been teaching in-person, except for when we switched to remote learning for three weeks before the December break. Students need to social distance. Partitions had to be used. There is less social interaction or collaborative work. Materials have to be sanitized frequently. When we came back in January, students were divided into two classrooms.

The pandemic has really altered the learning environment. Not only are students sometimes (or always) learning at home through Google Meets or Zoom, thus making their learning environment no different from their home environment, but students who ARE in classrooms are not experiencing school in the same way it has been in previous years. This has had a largely negative impact unfortunately. The limitations that now exist for what can be done in the classroom-specifically how students and teachers can move around and interact- have created an ineffective learning environment. Students are unable to collaborate with peers in the same way, teachers are unable to closely assist students, everybody is separated by physical barriers and six feet of space, etc. This inhibits the social aspects of learning, as well as greatly restricting student learning because not much can be done besides basic "sit at your own desk with a paper and pencil" learning, which does NOT adhere to every student's learning style.

The pandemic has had a profound impact on the concept of "an effective learning environment" in a number of different ways. First, many students are not even in a classroom, and are working from their home. In many cases, this means working from their bed or the couch. For those students who are remote, but some of their classmates are in the classroom, they are losing social interaction and collaboration. Students who are in the classroom, are forced to social distance from their teachers and classmates. In my classroom, students are separated through the use of "sneeze guards." However, I have gotten creative and have given my students in the classroom the chance to collaborate with one another by sitting near each other with their sneeze guards. They have been able to work with the students who are at home by using Google Meet and breakout rooms.

When making decisions, such as in education, the factors and variables that affect a student one way may affect another student in a different way. The final decisions that are made must positively impact the individual in question and so "consideration" for the best outcome can look different for every one. Additionally, "consideration" must continue - to examine if initial decisions are still effective and beneficial to the individual.

From my own teacher perspective, I find myself undoing traditional lessons, working backwards, starting with the hardest stuff first because it's "the point." I see that same thing reflected in SETT where the goal is to have teachers utilize tools in a MEANINGFUL way. By collecting data that focuses on the environment, strengths, and capabilities of the child, we are allowing ourselves to better consider what each child needs in a way that truly benefits them. It's like closing the gap for error.

Teaching older grades, I am used to helping shape these young new freshman into more responsible and accountable sophomores. In this year, because of the modifications that have needed to be made in education, I find the biggest struggles my students have is learning to grow up without a real transitional period and without support and guidance. There is a lack of focus on engagement and enjoyment in the educational experience, and of course I understand why- there is so much more to worry about. But if learning looses its excitement, then students will stop yearning for knowledge. I fear most about the long term effects this pandemic will have on education. What will the damage be from a year or more with no interaction, limited support, and lack of enjoyment?
