Hinton develops the theme of loss of innocence through setting because the Greasers live on the more shady side of town and it seems like the more unsafe part of town, so more things bad could potentially happen and scar them mentally and/or physically. She develops the theme using characters because the way she describes the characters is that they are tough and look like they have been through a lot in their short lives.
