When Ponyboy recited the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay", Ponyboy didn't understand what it meant but Johnny realized that it meant nothing pure can be in a person or thing their whole life. "Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold, Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay." (Page 77)

This makes some have a loss of innocence because when you get in a fight you realize that life isn't all safe and some people/places are deep down just cruel.
How does S. E. Hinton develop the theme through setting, characters, and plot over the course of the text?

S. E. Hinton develops the theme of loss of innocence through setting because the Greasers live on the more shady side of town and it seems like the more unsafe part of town, so more things bad could potentially happen and scar them mentally and/or physically. She develops the theme using characters because the way she describes the characters is that they are tough and look like they have been through a lot in their short lives. She helps develop the theme using plot because there were so many bad things that happened to the Greasers including deaths, having to run away, fights, etc.
