Taylor set up a supply base at Fort Polk, and "established Fort Texas opposite the Mexican City of Matamoros. Arista made a route that put his 4,000 man force between Taylor and his supply base. Taylor managed to not get trapped by Arista. Both armies ran into each other at "scrubby crossroads of Palo Alto" on May 8th. The American troops started by boldly stepping forward. The battle lasted three hours.
