These 40-70 foot tall formations were created after the retreat of the glaciers in the region following the last ice age, this glacier water from the surface created cracks then eroded and separated the formations from the rest of the cliff face. Then the advancing and retreating tides and the associated waves have eroded the base of the rocks at a faster rate than the tops, resulting in their flower pot shape. Now trees have grown out of the top creating their flower pot effect.
