Ibtihaj Muhammad is most well known for being an olympic gold medalist in fencing, and more recently a children's author. She is also an activist, entrepreneur, and public speaker. She is the inspiration behind the first hijab Barbie, and the first female, muslim Olympic Games medalist. Some other things she has written:

The story follows two sisters, Asiyah and Faziah, both of them are attending their first day of school. Asiyah, who is going into sixth grade, has picked her first day hijab that she is going to wear to the first day of school. Throughout the story her little sister Faziah talks about how much she admires her sister and her hijab and how some of the other kids are making fun of Aniyah's hijab. Throughout the story Asiyah and Faziah remember things their mother has told them about not taking what others may say about them to heart. K. Ali is quality literature for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, the illustrations were free of stereotypes, tokenism, and the "active doers". The illustrator, Hatem Aly, who is an Egyptian man, took great care in illustrating all the characters in the book, including the main characters who are muslim people of color. The storyline was free of racism and sexism, and flawlessly explained the bullying that muslim women who wear Hijabs may face in their day to day lives, especially as children. The relationships in the book focus on family, namely the relationship between two sisters, as well as their relationships with their friends and the bullies. This book, in my opinion would enhance children's self image, as it expresses the main point, which is loving yourself, and taking what others may say about you with a grain of salt. From the author's perspective, Ibtihaj Muhammad writes from her own experiences as a muslim child who wore a hijab to school and was bullied. This book checked every box for what I have learned is quality literature. (In my experience)! I would use this book as an example of what female muslim children may experience in their day to day lives, at school. I would use this book as a stepping stone prior to the explanation of the "history of the hijab", which dates back to 7th Century BCE. 

To supplement the book I would show the video linked below and have my students compare and contrast the Muslim religion to other religions they have learned about in class. I would also have them discuss what historical facts from the video they already knew from reading the Proudest Blue.
