Proctor and Parris’ severe differences create a very tense relationship between Proctor and Parris. The first quote shows Proctors’ belief in changing with the times and going against normal Puritan ways. As a reverend who thinks very highly of himself and his reputation in the church and the community, Parris rejects this idea, scolding him for “speaking his heart” and calling him a Quaker. The stage directions “(in a fury)” and the exclamation points used in this argument shows how their differences create a very heated and tense atmosphere between the two characters.
