Students could record themselves reading with expression, fluency etc. This could be motivating for struggling readers, or those who don't feel comfortable reading out loud. It might be fun to have students do it in the beginning and again at the end of the year. First graders could hear their reading progress for themselves.

I have the kids do multiple readings from primary sources but I tend to give them on paper so kids can highlight, mark up, etc, but this extension makes it so that they can do it virtually.

Many of my current eighth grade students had already installed the extension in seventh grade and were aware of functions such as read aloud and speech to text but they had not used the highlighting function or the make-your-own dictionary with words they were not familiar with from the text. I even showed that last function to one of my nieces, who is in college. I don't see why you couldn't use it throughout your studies.

It provides access to information, clarification, definition, etc., i
"in the moment" as students are reading, researching, and working, alone or together. However, I don't see an in depth use for it at the early childhood level. Perhaps it could be useful as a whole group activity to provide definitions or highlight specific text, such as sight words. It would need to be managed by the teacher in this respect.

The Read & Write extension has been very helpful in social studies. For each region of the United States the students have a packet of information to read that they use over a three week period to answer questions, create a lapbook, and design their own assignments. The information is dense and there are many new terms, so I have the students listen to it first. This has been especially helpful for students with reading challenges. Using the dictionary has become very routine for students. Also, I have students listen to their own writing before turning it in for correction. They often find mistakes that they did not see when reading it on their own.

For help reading, understanding, and engaging with text, the Hover Speech, Screen Masks, and Dictionaries will provide built in support. The read-aloud feature is great when I cannot find leveled text, especially with research projects. I liked learning about some of the new features like "collect highlights" that creates a Google Doc with color-coded text highlights. This is a great note taking strategy that sycs with Google Docs. I've also used Read&Write to have students review their own writing during the revising and editing stage. Being able to hear their own writing is helpful for students who often have difficulty finding errors.

I wonder if students can learn to effectively highlight information as notes and then collect them in one spot to use as notes.
I'm also interested in teaching students to use the vocabulary function to collect all the highlighted terms and definitions in one document that is easy to access. The new Stemscopes science curriculum is full of academic vocabulary that many students do not understand unless I parse most readings with them. Now I might have a way to have students work together in pairs or small groups to read, identify and learn words that they don't know. Groups can share the doc with one another and all groups can possibly share together.

We were researching famous people from Massachusetts and it was very helpful for my students to be able to listen to biographies. I have also used the Talk and Type for my struggling writers. I find that when I take away the physical act of writing, they are able to "write" so much more and are able to see themselves as writers. Lastly, I had my students listen to their own stories as a way to edit their work. They are more likely to catch mistakes when they hear it read aloud by someone other than themselves. My next step is to try out the vocabulary lists.

In addition, having the vocabulary tool allows the students to look up unfamiliar words. I also have the students use Read & Write to edit their work.
This has been a great tool for struggling readers. Although some of my students are still reluctant to use it (and be seen as struggling), others have embraced it and use it for several different assignments AND in different classes. Usually however, they still need reminders to use it. This class has made me realize that my particular group of students really benefit from review of the tools that are available to them, and what features are available as well. The same goes for writing. When they are reminded to use this tool to LISTEN to their own writing being read back to them, they are so much more likely to catch mistakes.

I have used Read&Write for a few years, but mostly just to have kids read back their own writing, use word prediction and the talk and type feature. I love the idea of being able to highlight, collect and organize information for research purposes. I am looking forward to sharing these features with my students

I have used this tool with my students to help then edit their own writing. They have their own writing read back to them and listen for where they need to edit. I didn't know about the highlighting tool that allows what has been highlighted to placed in a google doc with the link to the source. This will be perfect for an upcoming research project the kids will be working on!

I can see myself using Read&Write to help me create word banks and vocabulary lists for my kids. It is also a great tool to use when my K students are publishing their work. The speech to text feature makes it much more realistic for a young student versus typing.
