The rhetorical situation consist of a few important elements. One factor in which I feel is crucial is the audience. Without the audience there is no inspiring or persuasion. An artists main reason for producing art work is to shine a light on injustices happening around the world. Art work pieces ignite conversation which then lead to change. Without an audience there is no conversation which then makes the art piece just an image. The second most important element is having a purpose. When creating art work, especially on the subject of social justice, an artist must have a reason as to why they are inspired to create such art. Visual literacy from the audience could not be obtained without an artist having a purpose for their work. Purpose creates inspiration, without it, an artists message is gone. An artist must ask him/herself what they are trying to convey/communicate to their audience which will in turn help them determine their purpose. For example, are they trying to inform? Persuade? Educate? Entertain? Raise awareness? Once an artist knows there purpose the audience will acquire its visual literacy.

Here we see an image of “la terapeuta” which means therapist in Spanish by Chingona inc. Chingona Inc. is an online brand which seeks to promote women empowerment, especially in the Latin culture. With our current president, latinos today are struggling. Struggling for social justice and job opportunities. This image inspires me to continue in my education and become the professional I hope to one day be. To become the speech therapist that helps their clients become the best versions of themselves and impact lives. The purpose of this image is to inspire and motivate latin women in pursuing their educational goals and career.

Frida Kahlo self portrait on the boarder between Mexico and the United States, 1932.

Frida Kahlo is known all around the world for her famous paintings. Each painting with its own unique story and purpose. The purpose for this painting came from her sorrow of missing her home and roots that are Mexico. The audience can clearly see Frida Kahlo’s interpretation of the US and Mexico through this painting. She depicts Mexico as a earthy, green, and organic country. Using bright colors and soft strokes. In contrast with the US side which seems more grey, bland, and industrial. We, the audience, can clearly see where her loyalty lies which is the place she calls home, Mexico. Frida Kahlo has inspired so many women with her paintings. Her paintings communicate her personal stories and struggles which many women feel they can relate to. In her paintings she includes her facial hair and nipples which sparked much controversy. However, this controversy lead to the subject of women empowermentand and the idea of the female body being more than just an object. In the patriarchy society she was accustomed to then, this was a huge deal and is relevant in current times.
