Many Schools have these programs put in place for their Non-English speaking families that recently immigrated to the United States or if they're foreign exchange student who needs a little more extra help understanding the English language.
Methods differ of course in the classroom but typically you'll see Teachers use photographs and drawings, simple methods to represent things, and practice this.
The rosetta stone is important to this curriculum too- being able to practice and learn the new language.

Like any other classroom you progress as long as you show you've learned the material. So in other words you move on when your english language comprehension has improved to the next level.
For new students they spend most of their school day in the ESL class, little by little the teacher will integrate them within the regular classes just as long as they show proficiency.
Those students who has come to understand and speak basic English may then start to only attend the ESL program for an hour or so in their school day.

Strategy #1: Communicative language teaching

CLT or communicative Language teaching is a method that puts a firm focus on students and their ability to communicate with one another in a real life situation and context. This includes ordering something, asking for help or just how to explain things. This is beneficial for problem solving and knowing they are ready for this and not judging their grammar and just on how well it's expressed

Although the teacher doesn't need to be proficient in all foreign languages its common for them to learn as they teach or simply on their own to really connect with the students. There are certificstions required depending on the states so the teacher must have or are seeking an ESL add-on endorsement and have a degree in English or Language Arts or teaching in general

Strategy #2: Total physical response

The total physical response is a method that gets down to the definition of things. Action words or additives, things that require a good demonstration can be used here. The word jump can be used under TPR by physically jumping. Staying active and engaged is an excellent learning tool especially when teaching younger ESL students as they will lose focus after a while of sitting in class and its important to keep things lively

This method allows students of either the same level of reading or perhaps different levels to relax and put their stresses aside to learn a book and get enveloped into the story. While reading they can ask for help and even be read to as they follow along and this helps understanding and learning the language in a simple way they can enjoy.

To have a child undergoing this transition can be busy and parents can feel discontented as loved ones are learning and speaking a language that's new for them as well so keeping families intertwined and active is important. Some schools allow volunteers to come in and assist and engage and be active with their students and classroom life. also having open and accessible learning programs to look through outside of the classroom allows the parents to know, help and even learn for themselves English. And like all things feedback is always nice. telling a teaching what's working and what's not is always important as no one knows their student as much as their family does.
