Born in Brooklyn, Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1933-2020) was an American lawyer who served as an associate judge on the Supreme Court from 1993-2020. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton and was the 2nd female judge to serve on the Supreme Court, and the first female Jewish justice. She attended Colombia Law School and eventually taught there. She has 2 children and is universally recognized as a figure of female empowerment.

While in law school, her husband was diagnosed with cancer. She took on the responsibility of taking notes for him while he was receiving treatment. RBG attended both her own classes and her husbands. Both managed to finish and she was only 1 of 4 women who were accepted and graduated from Colombia law.

Throughout the time of her career, RBG passed several of the most influential statutes for women's rights. First, she passed a statue that did not allow for college admissions to be denied on the basis of sex. Then, she stopped sex based discrimination within the work place. As if that wasn't enough, she voted to pass Title IX, worked towards equal access to FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act), and even sat on the bench for Bush v. Gore which was a case the United States never would have imagined. But not everything she did was for women. RBG made sure that men were given the same benefits to be stay at home parents that women did, and supported several cases that stopped discrimination towards African American peoples right to vote and right to equal pay or education.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg has such a rich identity. She is a woman, she is a mom, a wife, a daughter, a New Yorker, Jewish, a lawyer, a justice, and a friend. Her identity is extremely diverse and every student should be able to relate to her in one way or another.

It is important to teach students about their identity that they realize that there is so much more to them than just meets the eye. For younger students, they may not realize what an identity is and how it affects your personality. For older students who have a better concept of themselves, teaching identity can help them see where their personality comes from. Overall, teaching identity in a group setting is important for students to see that they are not so different from their classrooms. Or, on the flip side, that they may be very different and that is okay too.

Teaching Character Traits

Character traits and identity often go hand in hand. This is a good way to help students remember about these topics but they are different. Your identity is the "who you are" whereas character traits are the "what do you do" or even can go as far as "what do you look like." Its is important that students see that their identity causes them to have the certain character traits that they do. Both character and identity focus on "I am" statements.

Talking about RBG is a great segway into other important figures for women's history month. RBG is a great starting point because she was a women who faced and overcame challenges, as well supported other women through their challenges. This gives great leeway to talking about other figures who overcame a challenge or helped the challenges of others. It can even be pushed further to delve into a further analysis of how the students can overcome challenges and support others.

The whole premise of this story, is that Ruth argued and disagreed and eventually got what she wanted. While this may sound like it lends itself to creating bratty children, it is the first step in civic engagement. Students need to be made aware that sometimes things are not fair and if they feel that it is not fair, they have a voice. We need to teach students how to properly use their voice so they can feel the power of their words and disagreeing.

We would not know the name of Ruth Bader Ginsberg unless she was as outspoken as she was. Too often we are forcing students to follow in line, especially women, and not speak out because it is impolite or "un-lady like." We need to work towards breaking that stigma and teach everyone, but especially young girls, that being outspoken is an amazing character trait to have.

I have never read about someone who I felt reflected my persona the way that RBG made me feel. Both from New York, both Jewish, both left handed, and both of us were known for being outspoken and argumentative. I was very repressed in grade school from being outspoken, so as an adult seeing that someone else was the same way made me not only resentful towards my education but adamant that nobody would get in my way again. When she passed, I decided that I would be a lawyer. I felt like it was my responsibility to stand up for those who lost their voice with RBG's passing. My uncle was going to be a lawyer and never finished, so I was picking up where he left off. When life started to take me a different route, I came to realization that I may not be the person on the stand, but I will teach my students to take a stand. I continue to follow the notions and liberties that RBG fought so hard to provide for me, and who knows, may I will set a fire to a little soul that does what I was unable and change the world in a different way.
