SQ3R strategy can be used across grade levels and is great for reading for information across content. Here is a link to a simplified description of the process from Dartmouth. Adding an app like Subtext to this strategy is great for collaborative reading, discourse, and uderstanding.

Close reading of both fiction and nonfiction texts. Lots of modeling and practice with students. Check out Notice and Note by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst (for fiction) and Close Reading of Informational Text by Sunday Cummins (for nonfiction, obviously!) for close reading teaching strategies.

All of these collaborative resources are helpful to explore, but will a standardized test really measure how well a student uses these tools for critical analysis. For example, a student blogs, uses an online discussion tool such as Schoology or Edmodo, participates in global video chat--they are reading, writing, critiquing, researching, collaborating in new ways to communicate, but a standardized contradicts all of these forms of communication. For instance, will a standardized test measure collaboration or global exchanges?
