2) They can be, it depends on the author's intent. Some stories are aimed to be relatable, so that a reader can enjoy it more. 2) It could have been better. For the most part, the book was immersive in that it knew what should happen and when. The author knew how to invoke emotion in the reader, often with  the characters' thoughts. Before the book's ending, we are taken into the mind of an old Noah, his most troubling thoughts, brought to our attention. He lives with Allie in a nursing home, taking care of her. Everyday, she forgets who he his because she has Alzheimer's. The book ends with Allie finally remembering who he is and then proceeding to take his shirt off. A few pages prior to this, a really powerful metaphor was used by Noah to describe their situation.
